Because it doesn't exist or refuses to run? If the latter, you may need to enable pulse

Done.
It thinks it's making noise.

Have you ever heard it make noise? Does it have built-in speakers?

Code:
ls /var/log
returns:

Code:
ls /var/log
alternatives.log apport.log.5.gz boot.log dpkg.log installer syslog syslog.6.gz Xorg.1.log
apport.log apport.log.6.gz bootstrap.log faillog kern.log syslog.1 syslog.7.gz Xorg.1.log.old
apport.log.1 apport.log.7.gz btmp fontconfig.log kern.log.1 syslog.2.gz upstart
apport.log.2.gz apt cups fsck lastlog syslog.3.gz wtmp
apport.log.3.gz auth.log dist-upgrade gpu-manager.log lightdm syslog.4.gz Xorg.0.log
apport.log.4.gz auth.log.1 dmesg hp speech-dispatcher syslog.5.gz Xorg.0.log.old
Pavucontrol works but following what written in the thread https://askubuntu.com/questions/9985...d-audio/998530 didn't change anything. No sound was audible even after applying the change written there.

I have built-in speakers, I hear them under Windows but no sound at all under Linux. :-O I have dual boot on this PC.

Do you have something to plug into the headphone jack to hear if it's getting sound? No /var/log/messages! What's /etc/syslog.conf ?
