Hi there! im quite new in linux especially in mandriva (mandrake). im using Mandrake 10.0

my only problem is that i can't hear any sound in my pc. i've noticed during the start-up that the alsa fails, and says that there are no sound cards detected. im using the built-in sound card of asus p4s800, in the (p4s800) manual it says that has an ADI AD1980, but the one detected in the mandrake's configuration tool is an SiS 720 audio controller. what am i suppose to do? and every time i start mandrake, it always displays an error telling me that /dev/snd/ doesn't exist and it sets the value to null, i can't remember the details. no modprobe, no alsamixer... i dont know what to do!!!!!! pls help me!

i've don't have the know-how to do it, may be you can give a step-by-step guide. by the way im just using linux for qt programming, i thought playing mp3's would help me release stress. thank you very much!

I have never had good luck with Mandrake and have long since abandoned it and gone to MEPIS. Right now I am running SimplyMepis 3.3 on a P4S800D-E Deluxe. It plays CDs "right out of the box" using KMix and KsCD and the on-board audio. I know nothing about qt but am sure that MEPIS either has it or will let you get it easily from the Debian repositories.

Because you are new to Linux I think your best bet is to accept that you have made an unfortunate initial choice of distribution and try MEPIS. The mirrors are listed on http://www.mepis.org/node/1462.
