sound with ASUS A7N8X-X

I'm having a couple of problems with sound. I have mandrake 10.1 and am using the on board sound on the ASUS A7N8X-X.

Every time I start the computer and view the list of the services starting it says that ALSA failed because a soundcard couldn't be found. If I open a terminal and run alsaconf as root and go through the setup (making the default choices) i can get sound to work. The default driver for the sound is "intel8x0". The device for the sound is /dev/dsp

The question I want to ask is what files do I need to change so I do not have to do this every time I start the computer. If I need to post the results of any commands/data from config files then please say what files.

I have an Asus A7N8X - E that works perfecty running Mandrake 10.1. Try running the sound config module found in Mandrake Control Center. My guess would be that it should work, but it's not setup correctly there and is being over written everytime by MCC.

It looks as if the older oss module is loading. The alsa modules would look more like this.

snd - intel8x0

good luck.
