Cancel Culture has arrived at Slackware LQ.

What I find disgusting also is that the Slackware BDFL is participating in this too.

In any case, the behavior exhibited is identical to what got the Drakeo account permanently banned. I personally don't care if they are one person, or two, or three, or more (and yes, I could name more accounts that I strongly suspect are the same person). Point is that the trash should be taken out.
Esp. the sentences "I called out the ... actual identity" and "Point is that the trash should be taken out.".

I hope y'all are proud of yourself now.

What's next??? A Code of Conduct for Slackware???

And just to beat a dead horse:

I very much agree with Didier's post. Much of this frustration and anger voiced by @igadoter and others could've easily been avoided. If only ...

What's saddest about all this is that Slackware is losing good people like AlienBOB because of Slackware BDFL's stubbornness.

No.

People who break the rules of the forum are banned by the forum owner.

"Cancel Culture" is a toxic phrase used by people who do not believe in personal accountability.

What you point at is a very different story. Nothing fair in trying to agregate stories.

Rules are Code of Conduct. It compels us and it protects us. As usual.
If you do not want to follow rules you do not belong the society that promulgate it.

MadMaverick9, no one should have to deal with an abusive stalker, and even the kindest person will eventually have enough of being an object of abuse. The site is called Linux Questions not Linux Bullying. I had no problem with igadoter and I think he just had a bad day. There have been people coming on here with venom dripping from their mouths and he wasn't one of them. He is a bit contrarian like Darth Vader. I miss Darth Vader. I hope he is enjoying Plasma 5!

Also Slackware went back to Python 3.9 since 3.10 was too disruptive. I suspect part of the wait is for the 5.15 kernel branch to stabilize. Slackware 15 is like a soft reboot in my mind.

Cancel culture is infectious, and the new buzz-word for those who do not welcome intellectual debate or accept another POV than their own. Blame culture is more prevalent on social media and in society. Blaming Pat for "stubbornness" as a reason why Slackware is losing good people is a prime example.

To perform the same job/role/task for +28 years is quite an achievement. What Pat has done with Slackware is nothing short of monumental. He's had help from some very skillful and talented individuals, and I'm quite certain he's as grateful for their input as much as we are as end-users. We should be grateful every day for all what we receive. When people decide to move on in life, for whatever reason, we should wish them well and respect their decisions and choices.

Pat owes the world nothing. Except maybe a deaf ear and a blind eye to whatever criticism he faces from Slackware users, which is unfortunately becoming a more common phenomenon in recent times. Whast's saddest about all this is that people act like they are owed something by Pat and the Slackware Team, or that they have some rights that need to be observed and respected. Bottom line is, if Pat wants to jack it all in and call it a day with Slackware, so be it. He moves on, the world moves on, alienBOB moves on, Slackers move on, and they/we all find other things to do in life.

Take it while the opportunity exists. Strike while the iron is hot. Enjoy it while it lasts, because nothing lasts forever.

I would like to say:

- I also think Didier has a valid point there and I am sad that AlienBOB felt the same way.
- I hate suppression of opinions.
- I personally view the "Cancel" movement (and almost all the new ideologies with post-modern roots) as experiments, started by well-meaning people, but gone horribly wrong.

Yet:

There is also something called "abuse". Didier and many others have expressed their discontent in a very civilized manner and did not face any bans. Unfortunately igadoter (and more recently and strongly, max.b) consistently showed bevaviour which could best be described as trolling. He was expressing opinions already being expressed, but it felt like he was more interested in creating outrage than making any useful discussion.

Is creating outrage a crime? No. Many "facts" or "truths" of today were outrageous ideas in the past. That means we must tolerate outrageous speech as much as we can. There is no --and there can be no-- well-defined, theoretical upper limit to this: Human behaviour and feelings are not quantifiable (I'm a mathematician, btw. ). In practice, however, there is an upper limit where disorder starts taking over the benefits of freedom. This is not something computable, there is no clear guide (unless you are a zealot of some sort): The society must act on instinct. If it is a society that keeps making the wrong choices all the time, they pay the price eventually.

Some years ago I was the moderator of a respectable forum, of much smaller size than LQ. Despite the lower traffic, keeping the place in a decent state was taking considerable time. Me and the other moderators were trying to be as tolerant to trolls as we could, but still in some cases we had to ban people, out of exhaustion.

Have the LQ mods overreacted by banning igadoter? I believe that for most people here the answer is "no". That this was the right decision and that we are not moving towards some oppressive environment can not be proven of course, only time will tell. We must move on, but also not forget to (re)evaluate the consequences of such actions from time to time.

"Cancel culture" is an intimidation tactic used by the progressive-left against those who do not share their world view. It's not "Personal accountability", it's being held accountable by the Mob, based on standards of their devising.

And at this point "toxic" is so overused it has become a meaningless buzzword.

Anyway, Igadoter's ban was not "cancel culture", so I don't know why we're even talking about it. I don't understand what triggered his tirade against Jeremy, but it's hard to argue that he didn't step over the line. However frustrating I found him at times, he wasn't a troll, and the situation is unfortunate.

To paraphrase an old cliche - "Never attribute to malice that which is more easily explained by alcohol impaired judgment" Online ranting is often the new "drunk dialing".

Cancel culture is real and its not about avoiding accountability! Its about the failure of the cancel mob to compartmentalize. Its often falsely claimed by individuals who say they were canceled but were in fact victims of their own failure to compartmentalize.

I don't know that either of these banned folks are claiming to have been canceled, but they were not. They got banned for being obnoxious on THIS forum, not for things they said or did elsewhere.

I've found LQ to be very accommodating. Years ago my posting was less than stellar and I received a warning. I amended my ways and I'm grateful to be a member here today. I'm happy to see that LQ offered the OP a chance to open up a dialogue with the LQ admin team. Back on topic.
I think we're a lot closer to 15.0.

Igadoter is not a troll.

max.b was definitely one. Staged his threads and used obvious troll tactics.

Both were banned - but the similarities end there.

Does anyone here even know what a language barrier is?

LQ is an international forum. While English is the standard language everyone uses there are a huge number of variations to learn. The USA alone has at least 3 different versions of english and we aren't even the ones who created it.

Before you start some toxic rant about cancel culture and shit like that take a look at the broken english half the people on this forum are using. The number of times everyone gets mad over a sentence with missing pronouns and ass-backwards adjectives is astonishing.

igadoter is a perfect example of this. People who are not native english speakers often sound direct and aggressive because they know a limited number of words. There are plenty of people on this forum who recognize this and they apologize for their poor english in advance to warn people that they might say something stupid - Becuase that's just life. I don't think igadoter understands how his words were being read and made some BS excuse about (reverse?) racism. He clearly needed a break.

Those of us who come from native english speaking nations should pull our heads out of our asses and realize that the world doesn't revolve around our bastard child of a language. I effing swear sometimes I wanna slap you people.

Such as?
Other than accents, there is really only one proper form of English in the U.S. Anything else is just gutter slang, what some call "thug culture." Over the last couple of years of watching the steaming services during the pandemic, e.g., Netflix and Amazon Prime, I've formed the opinion that Hollywood has an "let's drag everyone down into the gutter" agenda. Almost everything they produce themselves is dark, deviant garbage!!! When they do put their name on something worth watching, it was usually produced by someone else and bought by them after the fact.
