Just adding my own 2 cents worth... p3 1ghz, 512mb, geforce2 gts (not kidding!), nvidia drivers 5336 - managed to get timedemo of 17.5fps on 640x480 after tweaking with config files (though slower than windows at 18.8fps). Still quite playable, expectantly slows down like heck with lots of action, otherwise about 13-16fps average.
I've also got the same sound issue as with purplecow - and its not due to alsa being loaded into mandrake (the module loaded es1371 is oss, snd-1371 is alsa). As far as i suspect, its something with the es1371 module itself - looks like some function call doom 3 uses is missing in the driver.
Has anyone done kernel tweaking yet? It would be interesting to see the results (apparently up to 30% faster on 2.6.8.1). I've included my autoexec.cfg settings below for interest cheers!
so with 1ghz and geforce2 gts, 640x480 with all that settings, you get avg 18 fpson time demo 1??
wtf?
i have athlon xp 2000, 512mb ram, geforcefx5200, 640x480 with tweaked settings and customized 2.6.8.1 kernel, i get average 19 fps on time demo 1...
something fish is really going on here on my linux box.. on windows, same computer, doom 3 ran twice as fast..
and before anyone recommends things: i do use a very lightweight WM, i use NONE at all when running doom3.. and i got latest nvidia drivers--tweaked also cuz i recompiled the modules with optimization flags for my cpu. my kernel is strippped.. and i only have 2 daemons on init

I made a mistake. You have to run the game exactly as quake3:
run artsd, then run doom3 with:
artsdsp -m doom3
This trick worked to solve my sound issue with Doom3!!!
Running from KDE makes my sound choppy though so switch to a less fatty window manager (I like xcfe cholesterol free) and that should fix the choppiness. Then:
open a shell and type: artsd &
then type what's above: artsdsp -m doom3
my exact problem was the /dev/dsp input/ouput error about retrieving bytes (I'm at work so no exact error sorry)
I am running Slackware 10 with the built in sound card on motherboard with an NVidia 5500 LE that I have seen so many posts about. It has worked great for me (ET, UT2004 and now Doom3)
I'm running an SBlive! 5.1 card with standard alsa-1.0.4 drivers provided with kernel 2.6.8.1. The alsa OSS compatibilty library works just fine with doom3. For reference, here's an lsmod after running doom3.
Can anyone tell me which nvidia drivers give the best performance? i'm having trouble running getting the newest drivers to function properly (see this post for details) on my toshiba laptop with geforce4 420 go and suse 9.1 personal. do the newest drivers automatically give the best performance?
