1280x1024 resolution with an old Geforce card

I installed slackware 12.2 on an old box with a 733 Mhz processor and a Geforce 256 SDR graphic card.
Trying to improve the resolution up to 1280x1024, I downloaded and installed the recommended two pieces of software from Slackbuids.org namely: nvidia-legacy71-driver and nvidia-legacy71-kernel. Now I can see the nvidia logo for few seconds just before the start of X but the problem is that the resolution can not get better than 1024x768. I have manually added the "1280x1024" to the 24 default depth line in xorg.conf file but it did not help.
I know that my monitor is able to handle 1280x1024.

Any clue will be highly appreciated.

Try to set the resolution using the nvidia-settings utility, menu entry "X Server Display Configuration".

If that works, do it again as root, then hit "Save to X configuration file".

Thanks Didier.

nvidia-settings gives a choice of some resolutions equal or lower than 1024x768 so this does not help.

However, I did solve the problem by adjusting the Horizsync value in the monitor section in xorg.conf

Be careful now, check the manual and see if the monitor supports that Horizsync rate. I know nvidia-settings only gives you sane options so it doesn't damage the monitor.
