Help - X half-froze and I have unsaved data

Hi,

I can move the mouse around. Its currently in the form of a cross with half of a square outline surrounding the top left. But for some reason, I can't switch windows or input any text.

If I didn't have a large amount of unsaved data I'd just reboot..but thats not an option. Is there any way I can get out of it or do I have to clench my teeth and just restart?

I'm running gnome 2.8 on debian.

Please respond ASAP! These are prime programming hours going down the drain.

Depends what software you are using?
And what the data is...

You see, a lot of programs use temp files (that are put in /tmp) where the shown information on the screen is in it
(Let say a swap fle)

I was using boa-constructor at the time - an IDE. Anyways, thanks for the help, but I just restarted

Any ideas on why this happened to avoid similar errors in the future?

Not running strange program that makes the kernel get in panic?

Guess thats the only solution (guess there are more, but I don't remember any atm)
