XFCE Compositor

Hi everybody, I read somewhere that the compositor of XFCE make a nice effect. But when I activated it became significantly slower.

I have a core i7 and a Ati 5730, with the latest Ati drivers.

I need to do something in xorg.conf or another configuration?

Are you sure the ati drivers are installed properly? What's the output of 'glxinfo | grep -i render'?

I'm not an expert on ATI under Linux, since I find NVIDIA a lot easier to use. However, your xorg.conf doesn't look like you have direct rendering (DRI) enabled.

In the module section, add:

Code:

Load "dri"

Then create another section like this:

As adamk75 suggested, check the output of 'glxinfo | grep -i render'. It will tell you if Direct Rendering is turned on. Here is the output from my NVIDIA card as an example:

The suggested additions to xorg.conf are likely completely unnecessary. By default these days the DRI module is loaded (even when not specified), and the default permissions on /dev/dri/card0 are sane.

The glxinfo output is really critical as it lets us know what version of the drivers are installed and that they are, in fact, installed properly.

Alright, so we know you're using catalyst version 10.6 and the drivers are definitely installed properly. I'm not sure why xfce4 compositing would be so slow for you. I have a HD4850 here, and see no real slow downs with xfce4 compositing with 10.6. Did you use an older version of fglrx on this installation at one point?

Know I don't see a slowdown only in glxgears, but in my daily use its fine.
Maybe I need to reboot, or something but now is good.
