I've noticed on previous installs of puppy linux (as well as knoppix) there isn't an option to have a username or password at setup.

Does anyone know how this is done? Ubuntu goes through this process normally and these options are built into the setup process, so I don't know what this is about puppy.

Believe it or not, that behavior is by design. Puppy Linux is intended more as a "personal Linux" than as a multi-user, shared server.

PSM - Many Thanks. I may just try this on a test setup. I've basically got two laptops and one for testing purposes only, so I can always reinstall.

Tried Xubuntu over the weekend. Very nice, but my system is limited to 160MB RAM & has 550 MHz CPU and it's really too slow.

Do you know if there is a smaller distro out there that comes with username & password options as part of the installation process? The Linux book I am using is is based on Ubuntu which is why my original line of thinking was to go for a minimal install of Xubuntu.

Puppy is an option, but only if I can get the above process to work.

Just to update, I installed puppy on its own and grub came up. This is a first as in the past, it wouldn't work and the cd wouldn't eject (old laptops...) so I had to do this manually eject the cd, but this time it worked (I did this after not saving to disk).

Worst case scenario - I will use a bios password.

Of all the distros I've tried, Ubuntu, DSL, Knoppix, Xubuntu - I seem to prefer this one. It's a real gem and probably one of the best linux for beginners and very light on old systems.
