I forgot both my username and password for Linux

I am unable to get into my Linux. I have not been it for over a year and now I have forgotten both my user name and password.

I have also looked at other Threads and was unable to find explisit directions on how to get in.

I did try and follow some of the directions that I saw here and I was able to press e on bootup it takes me to a screen that says "rootnoverify (hd0,0) I pressed c it takes me to "grub" at which time I type password and then it tells me "Must be Authenticated"

Please help,

Thanks a lot.

You should be able to boot off of a Linux boot CD, mount the partitions manually, then edit the passwd files to have no password. I haven't had to do it on Linux, but have successfully done it on SCO OpenServer before...

Are you using the GRUB loader?

If so try:

FROM http://souptonuts.sourceforge.net/ho...pen_source.htm

Resetting Redhat Linux Passwords using GRUB

1. Press 'e'
2. Press 'e' again
3. Append 'single' to the kernel version listing

See
