problem installing driver atl1e
Howdy,
I have a Acer D250 netbook with Mandriva 2010. It does not see my eth0 and won't let me configure it. So I downloaded and installed the atl1e driver that is suppose to fix this. The last part of the instructions is to cd to the driver and do ismod atl1e.ko, however the file there is atl1e.ko.gz.
Also where is the config file to force Mandriva to use the atl1e driver? It keeps trying to use the old one.
Thanks!!

Hi, the file I use is /etc/modprobe.preload
Code:
# /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line. Comments begin with
# a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored.
# this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY
# for old kernel use /etc/modules
currently, I don't need to, but I have had to before.
you'll need to restart the computer for that to work alone.
Quote:
the instructions is to cd to the driver and do ismod atl1e.ko
Was that command insmod?
For more, Type
Hope this helps you,
Regards Glenn

I found out a little more info..The kernel version I'm using is 2.6.31.5- if I search for atl1e.ko* I find three of them with different kernels. Version 2.6.31.5 has atl1e.ko.gz
version 2.6.29.? is atl1e.ko and 2.6.26.? is atl1e.ko.gz. So it looks like the the 2.6.29.? has the right driver, but I use the newer kernel. Maybe this driver is for that certain kernel? I don't know.
The instructions say insmod atl1e.ko , then the error is the file isn't found. because its atl1e.ko.gz.
I this problem is beyond me.

Have you thought about hacking it.
This is GNU/Linux after all.
use locate to search for the module insmod expects
you may need to update the database first, su to root, then
Code:
updatedb && locate atl1e.ko.gz
Then insmod it form there, or copy it to an appropriate place first.
which may be /lib/modules/2.6.31.6-1mnb_GamesBox/kernel/sound, (or something like that)
If it works, copy the module name to the file /etc/modprobe.preload
see how you go.

Mango boy,
I ended up buying a USB to Ethernet adapter for $30 at office depot, it works great. However my problem now is I'm in Afghanistan with no internet to connect my laptop too. So I'm screwed many different ways.

Hi, insmod is supposed to unpack the zip file it's self.
On use.
Is there a module loading that is not supposed to?
If so, you can blacklist that module, easy to reverse in this case (ethernet)
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mdv (read the doc first to see how to blacklist a module.)
reason being, sometimes a module is loaded and the kernel does not try to load another.(dumb, it only knows what it is told)
Then you can add the full address to
Quote:
If it works, copy the module name to the file /etc/modprobe.preload
Hope this helps. Glenn

I got it fixed.
I just was able to get back online today. I had a boat load of updates waiting with a new kernel.
I tried to install the atl1e driver again and it gave me lots of errors.
I had before blacklisted the atl1c driver, so I un-blacklisted it this allowed it to show up at least in the ifconfig and the network connection gui. before when I tired to configure it, it gave me errors about missing hardware or something like that.
But this time I was able configure it and connect to the internet!
So I suspect the updates fixed it....thanks everyone for the help.
