Following a motherboard failure creating boot time of about five minutes, so I decided to do a reinstall.
During the reinstall, the system is telling me that my Acer K242HL monitor is not recognised throwing up the message that there is a fatal error. (EE).
A quick google tells me that the maximium resolution is 1920 x 1020, but setting those figures (and many of the thousands of other options) creates the same error message. ...... and the advice to change some of the options.
As I have been trying to fix this problem for more than a week, I would appreciate finding a cure for this problem.
This kernel is rather old, but maybe the support for newer Intel was backported. You can see the version of graphics with lspci, the version of Xorg and Intel driver are in Xorg log.

The VGA and 3D are red. Everything else is white.
Since I last made my post I've realised I can't install either kate or nano to inspect the Xorg.log to provide the information requested by emerson requested. (I can't even ping ..... no host........ but, imo, one problem per thread)
Well I got, finally, the screen to stop playing annoy the operator. I now can get to the desktop.
Thanks to both ondoho and Eremson for their assistance.
What I did was find a copy of Mint's Katya (yes I know it's old .... but it worked) and install it, then reburn't the ISO to a dvd. Followed by a re install.
Upon re install the same problem occurred, but I selected the Generic VESA drives, set at the screen's specification figures, with resolution set to automatic.
That problem went away.
Now to find out why I'm being told there is no ethernet device found.......... but I'll round the net before seeking help.
Once again thanks for the assistance. Much appreciated, and I hope I did not annoy you too much.

The Skylake chipset on your motherboard is newer than Mageia 5, so inadequate support in stock configuration for at least something on it is pretty much to be expected. Mageia 6 (Cauldron) is rather well along in development, though it's latest isos are nearly 3 months old. If Mageia is what you wish to stick with (avoiding Plasma 5 is not an issue for you), you may be best off to upgrade to Cauldron, but use a net installiso that's currently only five days old instead of the aging DVD iso. It will quickly let you know if your ethernet device works, since you won't be able to get installation started without it. And, the video support it provides should work better than 5's fallback configuration.
