reinstall creates monitor being incompatible
Following a motherboard failure creating boot time of about five minutes, so I decided to do a reinstall.
During the reinstall, the system is telling me that my Acer K242HL monitor is not recognised throwing up the message that there is a fatal error. (EE). A quick google tells me that the maximium resolution is 1920 x 1020, but setting those figures (and many of the thousands of other options) creates the same error message. ...... and the advice to change some of the options. As I have been trying to fix this problem for more than a week, I would appreciate finding a cure for this problem. Thanks. |
many questions:
- how is a reinstall going to fix a hardware problem? - i have never heard an installer bothering with the actual monitor, only with the graphic card. - please SHOW US what you actually did, i.e. example code, error messages - much more general info about your setup please. preferably as code, not narrative. |
What I did was follow the prompts of my install cd (md5sum check correct). aka instalation complete, please remove the cd and reboot the machine.
So I did/do and and it keeps comming back to "there is a problem starting your your graphical display........ Run drakx11 as root" There is no code to show you. Or I would have posted it. The motherboard is an asus H110M-A/M.2 the cpu is an itell i3 with 4 g of ddr4 ram. Drakx11 asks me for my graphics card, and defaults to Intel 810 and later. (amoungst what appears to be hundreds of options.) The monitor currently set to flat panel 1920x 1080 cause the acer K242 is not one of the hundreds of options. and resolution. Which is set to automatic Edit to add, when I change an option in drakx11 and test it. All it says is that An error occurred: (EE) Fatal Server error: Try to change some parameters. So I change an option and test it but get the same error message. Doing the reinstall I hoped would fix the really slow boot times. I was not trying to fix hardware problems. |
Kernel version, Xorg version, graphics version. None of these were provided. It is possible the software/drivers are too old for your graphics.
|
The ISO I am using I downloaded about 2 weeks ago, so I thought the kernel, org and graphics would have been current
Using the find command- the kernel appears to be 3.19.8-desktop-3.mga5/kernel/arch/x86/kernel the Xorg.1.xz asking find to display graphics provides more than a page of information. None of which indicates a version number. |
This kernel is rather old, but maybe the support for newer Intel was backported. You can see the version of graphics with lspci, the version of Xorg and Intel driver are in Xorg log.

You can us a pager as less to view logs.

Well I got, finally, the screen to stop playing annoy the operator. I now can get to the desktop.
Thanks to both ondoho and Eremson for their assistance. What I did was find a copy of Mint's Katya (yes I know it's old .... but it worked) and install it, then reburn't the ISO to a dvd. Followed by a re install. Upon re install the same problem occurred, but I selected the Generic VESA drives, set at the screen's specification figures, with resolution set to automatic. That problem went away. Now to find out why I'm being told there is no ethernet device found.......... but I'll round the net before seeking help. Once again thanks for the assistance. Much appreciated, and I hope I did not annoy you too much. |
