I give up.
I ordered a DWL-520 PCI card with a Prisum 2.5 chip set. I have a friend using Mandrake 9.1 and it works with him. Anybody want to buy my Realtek card? The very best guys.
Alvin
Hehe, maybe we can bundle our both cards, i have a PrismGT based 54 Mbit one now and installing the driver is a joke, hotplugging works like a charme and the whole thing is just simply cool. The realtek is collecting dust now...
I understand. I have only used Mandrake and Redhat distros. I will try slack on my laptop and see what happens. As for the guy above: I'm not sure considering my experience personally. Mandrake has made me happy on my desktop but on my laptop it seems to have trouble with some things. (removable bays, WPC11v4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Thanks for the response, I just joined but have been reading the posts for a while. This is a great place.
Could you send your files to coindood@yahoo.com, wolfgang? And anyone else who succeeds and sees this post too? (makefile, wlanup, wlandown) Especially Debian users! Thank you.
Well I got it going........by replacing the card with a DWL-520. Had it up in under an hour. Now I got to figure out how to unmodprob the Realtek crap that i see on boot.
Alvin
YAY! I got the card to work! Thanks a lot to finegan and wolfgang: THANKS A LOT! I've written up a report and check it out at www.dishedout.yourgiga.net/media/realtek/tut.php after sunday, as my server is being moved. JOY!
I have been through this forum starting at the beginning and reading ten pages, then at the last ten pages, and I still cannot get this card to run. I have an Edimax 7106PC card which uses the RTL8180 chipset. I have tried the drivers off the edimax website and the newer ones from the realtek website. I have been able to compile the module after downgrading to 2.4.20-30.9. I seem to be able to do everything correctly, but after I issue "iwpriv wlan0 enable", the Tx/Rx light blinks and the Link light blinks for a few seconds. Then the Tx/Rx light stops blinking and is just off, while the Link light blink a little slower. But no connection has been made. It almost seems like at first the card is trying to get a signal, but it just can't. I would really like to be able to use this card. If someone could please help me, I would appreciate it very much.
I just was looking over some posts and saw something about eth0 being disabled. Does it need to be disabled before this driver will work? I have a built in rtl8139 ethernet in my laptop.
No, you don't need to disable eth0. Once my server gets back up, Ill post a link to the SuSE driver (the one that actually works!). I also wrote up how to use the SuSE driver and get it working, but as I said, my server's down until monday. I'll see if I can retrieve at least the directions!
P.S Thanks to wolfgang, finegan, and all the early posters like mordanda for starting the post, I now too have joined to "able-to-use-it" club!
I have a compaq armada 1500c. I put the Wpc11 v4 in it. I have it partialy working. I followed the posting ASTRO made POST 688. It has managed to get my card recieving. When i ifconfig, i see RX for wlan0 going up, and iptraf shows the data is coming from 192.168.1.1 (my router). But the TX doesn't go up, and i can't ping my router.
The card's power light is steady, and the Link liight flashes.
I have set the ip of the card to 192.168.1.11, i have dhcp disabled on the router. when i type cat /proc/rtl1810/status it says LINK SUCCESS!
I have ran "iptraf" and choosen All Interfaces... under IP traffic monitor, and i see my brothers ip sending data to the router. So i can recieve stuff, i am just not connecting to the router.
I am not sure what i need to post about my settings (i am new to linux) and useing another PC to make this post so i can't copy and paste, and didn't want to spend 3 hrs typeing up alot of things from the laptop if i dind't need to.
Any suggestion? (or request for copy of settings) I useing Slack 9, running 2.4.22
--------------------------------------
need to update this... after the above happened, i shut down the laptop. Several hours later i went back to it and turned it now... now the channel is stuck on 0 the commands "iwpriv wlan0 wlan_para channel=11" or any number have no effect

Wanna know something funny about thr 8180 series stuff... I show no TX at all, in ifconfig or anywhere... all it says is that it recieves traffic whis isn't true cause i connect fine anywhere..... also the Link light ALWAYS flashes no matter what... just a constant flashing... even when theres no data coming my way. Kinda interesting, I figure it's just stuff with the driver.
If you are using a Realtek 8180 based card, the drivers only work for kernel 2.4.21 and below, though I've only gotten kernel 2.4.20 working. Do
Code:
dmesg | less
and scroll to the bottom, and post the gist of it. try route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, where the xs means the ip address for your router setup, and try making a /etc/resolv.conf file with
Code:
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where the xs mean the "defualt gateway" your router goes through. You can probably find that in the router status area of it's setup when you type in its IP address (I'm guessing 192.168.1.1). It wouldn't hurt making an ifcfg-wlan0 file. Try transferring the contents of the output of
Code:
dmesg | cat dmesgoutput
and
Code:
uname -a| cat unameoutput
and your wlanup file to a floppy and copy it to another computer so you can post it here for more help!
Hi folks, I had the "TX NORMAL descriptor unavailable" problem and
I "solved" it by setting my PCMCIA from "automatic" to "cardbus" in
the bios.
I know this is not a very helpful solution but maybe someone will
benefit. The problem came suddenly and went away suddenly too
but I'm hoping it won't come back again.
Edit: it looks like the problem actually goes away with a hard reboot,
not just a "shutdown -r" but a "shutdown -h", seems to me that
something is going wrong in my apm suspend routines.
Edit II: the problem also goes away with a 'cardctl eject' then an
"apm --suspend". After resuming and plugging the card back in
it is able to reconnect with the AP. Also, I see that someone is
working on an open source driver for this card so we may all have
success soon.
