Also, thanks for the comments on the scripts. I'm new to Slack so it gives me some info on where things should go at for init. and shutdown.
I'm using this version... rtl8180_linuxdrv_v13(gcc3.xx).zip off of that driver download page from realtek... if you search for 8180 or something of the sort and find the ftp for the other redhat files use the ftp to get this file, it's on there but may not be linked. I don't have time to link to it now but if you can't find it let me know and I will get to it when I get back from classes later this evening at 10pm or so. Good luck!

I hav a Edimax pci-card with a RTL8180 chip set running Mandrake 9.1 with a 2.4.21-0.13 kernel. I'm just wandering........has anyone got the rtl8180_24x.o driver to work with Mandrake? As soon as I enable the card it goes into the twlight zone.

Hey, guys, I've been following the thread since last week, and have looked over all the posts. Just wanted to know if anyone's gotten the new redhat v9.0 drivers to work, and I have a TEW-228PI trendnet PCI wireless lan card, but it uses the RealTek 8180 chips. It's not pcmcia, so has anyone gotten this to work on a pci based 8180 card?

I've heard that lots of you guys at least got the linuxant driver thing working, but I can't get it working at all when I do what they say in the readme!

I got this from Realtek Sunday
Alvin

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Was kernel 2.4.21-0.13 the default kernel of Mandrake 9.1? Did you try the latest driver from our website? I remembered I have tried Mandrake 9.1 before and the driver have posted on our website.

Subject: RTL8180

Hello,

First I want to thank all of you for trying to support the Linux OS. I

hope you and the Linux community can come with an easy to use, and

reliable driver. I picked my Edimax card with the RTL8180 chip set because

it said "Linux drivers included." Unfortunately I've yet to get ether the

included rtl8180_24x.o or the one I compiled on my system to connect to my

router. It locks up on iwpriv wlan0 enable. I'm a beginner and am at the

end of my limited knowledge. I am hoping that you will be able to come up

with a driver that my PC will like.

Mandrake 9.1

kernel 2.4.21-0.13

Intel Celleron 400mhz

Does your computer say:

insmod: a module named rtl8180_24x already exists
infra

and then just do nothing, not even return to the shell? because that's what mine says.

coindood: I also have a pci based card this is what I get when I run the wlanup (on debian with kernel 2.4.20-3-k7). it "works" but I can't get my laptop to connect to it.

Complete Noob with same problem...

I have the Linksys WPC11 v.4 card and the Realtek drivers. I tried to insmod the rtl80180_24x.o and got the error:

rtl8180_24x.o: kernel-module version mismatch
rtl8180_24x.o was compiled for kernel version 2.4.20-8
while this kernel is version 2.4.22-10mdk.

This is as far as I can get.
Apparently, I can compile a driver that will be compatible with the kernel but I have no idea what to change in the make file.

The readme says to change the defaults for:

KERNELRELEASE - represent kernel release version
IO_FLAGS - pci I/O space mapping
ENDIAN_FLAGS - big/little endian
OP_MODE_FLAGS - Operation on either AP or Client mode
DRV_FLAGS - Driver debugging messge ...etc.

but the first is the only one I can figure out.

Also, I have to specify the include path:

FOR EXAMPLE, " INCLUDEPATH=-I /usr/src/linux-2.4.18-3/include/ " in RedHat7.3.
FOR EXAMPLE, " INCLUDEPATH=-I /usr/src/linux-2.4.18-14/include/ " in RedHat8.0.

I don't have the "linux.." directory in my /ust/src, should I specify somewhere else or will it make the dir and I don't have to worry about it?

If someone can walk me through some of this I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks,

Phoenix

Surely there is a way to get this to work on MD 9.X. I am hoping that realtek themselves will make an update but i'm not sure when that will happen. I am considering buying a cisco card. My dad uses one for work and I decieded to try it on my MD laptop. I popped it in and was connected in a few minutes. I just want to use this card so I don't have to get rid of it. CURSE YOU REALTEK!!

Which distro would you recommend? I would love to try all of them but my roommate will kill me if I lag him for another three to five days.

i think any distro is ok, but you have to compile a custom kernel with a version less or equal 2.4.21, the original kernel from www.kernel.org, and the alan cox patches worked for me, if you need acpi support, i needed it, because pcmcia didn't work without acpi in my notebook

debian has a 2.4.20 kernel that works with this (it's in testing) but debian does not have that auto configure stuff

What, exactly, do I do once I have downloaded this kernel file?

Will that 'insmod' thing work after that?

No it won't. I am running Slackware 9.1 downgraded to the 2.4.21 kernel. You need to modify the makefile a bit and then compile the module for that kernel. It works flawlessly on my Slack and there are numerous others here reporting the same. If you use Slack 9.0 you can even use the out of the box kernel. Further it seems that Redhat 9.0 and Debian users succeded very nicely either (though under Redhat you seemingly need to fiddle a bit). If you like I can send you my makefile and wlanup and wlandown files via email.
I couldn't find EVEN ONE SINGLE USER in this thread who succeeded under Mandrake 9.1 or 9.2. Let's hope for future releases of the driver.

Greetings from cologne
