The are a number of command line e-mail clients: alpine and mutt being just two of many examples (I believe even emacs can be used, but I'm a vi person :-D). You should install a few with your distro's package manager (most have a way to search for packages, so you can search for "mail client") and then try to configure them and decide which one you like best.

Since you appear to be using Ubuntu, you can do something like "sudo aptitude install alpine" to install the alpine CLI mail client.

I don't know because I don't use hotmail. Do they sipport accessing your e-mail via POP3 or IMAP? If not, you may be out of luck...

There's a script or package out there called GOTMAIL, specifically done for accessing hotmail and other webmail accounts.
