Confusing issue with my new printer (title). Downloaded the Linux driver (ULD) and user manual here. The uncompressed ULD file contains nothing like what the manual specifies. Trying to run the install.sh script that is there (yes, as super-user) results in some error like "Vendor unspecified", or words to that effect. And no, cannot find any readme's in there. There are some PPD's in there, but the closest to my model does not work.
Good people, greetings...
Before anything, Debian user here.
What version? Platform? (64 or 32 bit?)

Without knowing the error message, it's hard to say. You don't say how the printer is connected (USB? Serial? Network), or what the exact error message was, or what "does not work" means in relation to the PPD file and how you used it (IF you used it).
The install script is one way to do it. You can also take the PPD file, GZIP it, and copy it to /usr/share/cups/model/samsung/ (if you've got CUPS installed and working), and see if you can install it through CUPS admin.

Yeah, start with the first question. It is AMD64 Debian Wheezy.
The error thrown by attempting to install via the install.sh script says this...
Code:
ERROR: VENDOR undefined , execution aborted
Very unsure of this one altogether. The only place in my limited experience where I have seen VENDOR as a parameter is in xorg.conf. Highly doubt it is trying to install a printer through xorg, is it?
The manual mentions (for Linux) downloading the uld package and executing the autorun as su. There is no autorun, just the install.sh.
Yes, I did try using the PPD, through the CUPS install new printer interface. There are some PPD's in the uld package, no-arch directory. The closest was the ML-2160 Series. The printer installs, but it has a cautionaty "!" triangle over it, trying to configure it results in this error message...

Not a clue myself, quite honestly...

Need it for things they send me from work, not for pissing around. Pain in the bloody backside printers, nowadays.
"nowadays"??? Printers have been the bane of my existence for 30 damned years now.

EDIT:
Yeah, that worked. Easiest and least time consuming solution for this (and no doubt some other Samsung) printer(s) on Debian.
Outstanding...thanks for not only posting what you did to solve the problem, but for marking it solved as well. Sorry I couldn't get back to you with something that worked.

Indeed, about the same time they've been a pain for me (-2 years), though I had some relatively easier times with the Amiga in the beginning.

No problem. I hope it helps someone else, sometime, too.
