Please share your building experiences

I have created this thread so that users can share their build experiences with AryaLinux. Just to give you a glimpse of things, over 3000 downloads of the builder DVD happened in the past two days but we never got to know how what the build experience. We would love to hear your build experience so that we can improve upon, correct our mistakes and come up with a better AryaLinux in the forthcoming releases.

Cheers!

Thank you for the nice new AryaLinux. This message comes from a fresh builded one. There were no real troubles, only ncurses compiled in the second try because of multiprocessor and of course some urls broken for example icon-naming-utils-0.8.90.tar.bz2 which could be fetched from http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/blfs/svn/i/ . Now I have a Mate Desktop and the error message nvidiafb: unknown NV_ARCH is gone, since rebuilded initramfs. Compiletime alltogether ca. 6 and an half hour. The Desktop feels a little bit faster than my old Debian ...
Best regards from germany

Hi dave4freedom,

Thank you for trying AryaLinux. Great to hear that you got Arya built from scratch. Would have loved to see some screenshots though :-)

As for the broken links, I have updated a lot of scripts that had broken links and uploaded them. sudo alps updatescripts should fix a lot of scripts. As for the compile time, 6.5 hours is pretty fast I must say.

Warm Regards

Hi jklmkr,

Good to hear that :-)

How did you build the USB? I mean did you use dd or some other tool?

Regards

ISO as the USB image. Haven't tried that before. I usually dd the image onto a pen drive. It sometimes fails though I don't know why. Only a reformat and then re-dd'ing works.

Nonetheless I'll the ISO as USB image method as well and see how it fares.

Regards.

Great to hear that.. Actually ncurses sometimes fails to build on multiple processors. Re running could have solved the issue. Anyways you can anyways install it from sources later. One way to check is enter grep ncurses /sources/build-log in case you haven't removed the /sources directory. Alsamixer is one option. You may try increasing all volume levels to max for the HDMI out. I guess you need to change the device using f6 in alsamixer. Then if you're in the mate desktop or in xfce also you need to change the output device name using the mate-mixer or the xfce-mixer icon in notification area. That should work..

Oh I almost forgot. In case HDMI is not even appearing in the output devices then I think you might have to rebuild the kernel. Can you please confirm if you can change to HDMI output in alsamixer. In case alsamixer and the xfce or mate mixer doesn't show hdmi, you need to rebuild kernel.

I found something in this thread:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=255422&page=19

Hope this might help. Basically all it tells is to do the following:

cat >> ~/.asoundrc <<"EOF"
defaults.pcm.device 3
EOF

Then reboot.
