Talking Newbies with old PCs unite and share your experiences

I have been working with Linux for two weeks now on the following system:
P I 233 MMX
64MB RAM
40 GB HD (I installed that one after I updated my BIOS, another tale...)

I am constantly trying to figure out what application is best fit for my old box in terms of memory usage and I thought if anyone else is out there with a similar setup we can share experiences.
My distro is Knoppix.

Window Manager: IceWm (no icons, no nothing)
Browser: Opera. Mozilla, Konqueror etc are just too slow and big, Dillo doesn't have enough features.
File Manager: Xftree. Opens in two seconds.
Audio Player: Xmms
Video Player: I wish...

My biggest problems so far have been:
- Remembering that Debian is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable
- Getting my CD player to play audio CDs (it plays it, but i can't hear anything so I have to rip it all)
- Accepting that the wheel on my mouse is just something to play with, not an input device.

Using what app? Xmms supports digital audio transfer
via a plugin that's commonly bundled with it... other apps
may not, but that can be fixed with a analog cable to connect
the CD-ROM to the sound-card ;)

Tried the Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" thing in the
mouse section of XF86Config? What happens?

Cheers,

Cable is connected, XMMS updated-> no sound still.
Added the lines to the file -> no movement...
The problem is that I can't check the mouse on another PC, it came with mine when I bought it for a ridiculously low price... Maybe the wheel just doesn't work. The CD player thing I do not understand. I have tried several players, all supposed to support audio transfer. Hey, like that I get a nice collction of music on my huge hard drive...
