The switch to kernel 2.6.0; any one want to share experiences
I just love the new kernel. Rock solid (the early 2.4 kernel had some stability problems, so this is quite impressive), fast, just love it. For example: movies in mplayer always jurked a bit with 2.4, like frames were droped or something like that. Just a bit though, you could still enjoy movies, but still. But since i'm using an 2.6.0(-testx) kernel, I haven't noticed that any more.
You can read my kernel install in my latest journal. But yes, it made a big noticeable difference with my 500mhz desktop machine I've upgraded thus far. Probably most likely do my other main desktop and that's it, really no reason to upgrade my servers yet.
This is a follow up to a post under the security forum. It installed without a problem on my dual PII 266 MHz computer. It seem to run faster, but I have a problem with chkrootkit detecting LKM, which could be a problem.
Hopefully it's just a bug and not a rootkit.
//Even tho I can't say it with any certainty, I'm pretty sure it's a bug in the Chkrootkit chkproc binary, just need to find out what it's tripping on.
It installed and booted no problem, but I had been using test kernels for a while.
I was a little dissapointed with it because it seemed perceptably slower than the kernel I'd been using, test9.
Anyone else notice that it seemed slower than the later test kernels?

Alsa mixer had crashed I guess when I was testing sound after reboot.
It was using 99% of the cpu and still performance seemed only slightly slower.
Killed alsa, seems fine now
Installed 2.6 just fine on my first try. That's an accomplishment for me considering that almost every time I've tried to compile a 2.4 kernel my internet gave out.
