Unicode woes....

the other day, i decided, having installed rxvt-unicode, that my system now had pretty much all unicode enabled software (exception with Zsh, but that's of minimal annoyance).

However, whenever i start a graphical app (gaim, firefox, even xfontsel) i get Xlib error messages.

for xfont sel
Code:
Warning: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C

for gaim/firefox
(copy and paste isn't working, so these are hand typed)
Code:
(app:number): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(app:number): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers
this also means that i cannot use the "highlight, middle click" method of copy and paste between the "unicode" apps, and the Xlib errored apps, this is INCREDIBLY annoying.

i thought perhaps it was my locale, so i tried to set locale to en_US.utf-8 (if it's going to supported, surely US english will be??) still the same.

set to C or my old locale (en_GB), no problems. works like a charm, it's the unicode.

i got a patched copy of the x packages (with support for DXTN copression/decompression) off a firend, i rebuilt those, wondering if the problem was that he hadn't had glibc i8n support.

Nope, still not working.

Does anyone have any ideas? or am i going to have to ditch unicode? The X version is 6,8,2 so it's hardly too old to have unicode support.

Slack version is slack-current. terminal is rxvt-unicode (lovely piece of kit apart from that). WM is fluxbox. 2.6.11.10 kernel.

Any help would be much appreciated. googling didn't come up with much, unless i was looking for the wrong thing.

thanks very much

try in uppercase, I mean en_US.UTF-8
It should be supported, see in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale

i tried that. No more errors, but still no copy and paste allowed from firefox/gaim to rxvt-unicode.

This is getting rather irritating.

On another note, having removed the frambuffer support from my kernel, when i ctrl-alt-F1 away from X, if i ctrl-f7 back, then my box locks.

i used to think it was a framebuffer issue, but now the framebuffer is long gone (removed entirely from the kernel). I'm running out of options.

dammit!

Any help much appreciated. but i'm running out of useful ideas.

Thanks

EDIT:less painful to read typing. this is what i get for posting while drunk.

EDIT again: well i've discovered that the problems with copy/pasting only occur when i use rxvtd and rxvtc (you run the daemon, then all terminals become one process and use less memory) which is a massive pity, as i find that feature so useful, i'm going to past on the mailing list about it.

also, i think the problem with X locking if you switch to a VT might be due to direct rendering. also annoying that you can't have VT's and 3D acceleration.

if anyone happens to know fixes for either of these issues, i'd appreciate it.

Ta,
