suspend via bindkeys as a user

Hi,

suspending my laptop used to works until a few months ago.
Now it goes into suspend but gets out of it right away to an awake state and locked-screen.
I have been unable to find the root cause yet.
The commands i was using were:

as user
Code:
dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
or
under fluxbox using xfce-power-manager with suspend selected when the lid is closed.

as root
Code:
pm-suspend
I see from another thread the need to move to ConsoleKit, fine, it is still not working for me.
Code:
dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit" /org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Manager org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager.Suspend boolean:true
The only thing i can identify is as soon a one usb3 is connected to a modem for network connection suspend fails.

Thanks, any hints on why my computer cannot stay in the suspend mode anymore ?

Perhaps a kernel update is the culprit?

yes montagdude, it looks like it could be a kernel issue but reinstalling various kernels as far back as 4.4.157, september 2018, didn't change the behavior.
I re-checked as per your suggestion.

don't understand why it goes into suspend then gets out of it as per the screenshot suspend.jpg?

the content of /etc/acpi looks like this
Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 314 Mar 7 2016 /etc/acpi/acpi_handler.sh

/etc/acpi/events:
total 12
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 635 Mar 7 2016 default
And running pm-suspend as root yields the below in /var/log/messages

Code:
Jun 27 19:37:29 q kernel: [ 800.842209] PM: suspend of devices complete after 646.554 msecs
Jun 27 19:37:29 q kernel: [ 800.859247] PM: late suspend of devices complete after 17.034 msecs
Jun 27 19:37:29 q kernel: [ 800.873568] PM: noirq suspend of devices complete after 14.318 msecs
Jun 27 19:38:36 q kernel: [ 866.249815] PM: suspend of devices complete after 712.881 msecs
Jun 27 19:38:36 q kernel: [ 866.266695] PM: late suspend of devices complete after 16.876 msecs
Jun 27 19:38:36 q kernel: [ 866.280890] PM: noirq suspend of devices complete after 14.192 msecs
I don't understand the messages syntax.

it seems the lid magnetic switch wiring and such is broken, unable to maintain my thinkpad in suspend mode,

Code:
cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state
state: open
