i was following on your replies to <Jubal> because i was curious of why a post with degrading lines inside it.
it is not of complexities that echoes here. but plain english when understood echoes such a sentiment.
maybe the way you phrased it was wrong or you could have rephrased it better but whats done cannot be taken back.
now about cheap labor and cheap workforce well, thats because the more you see the plain dollar ($$$) to other countries currency conversion, the reason you find the global IT players (read american corporations mostly) turning to them to increase their profits.
these corporations want nothing but profits. they care the least for employees skills or to have a workforce which includes you is a privilege.
my friend had once retorted and i would like to quote
"i was a bloody ****ung employee for 7 years but when i put my papers and had to wait for 3 months for the notice period it was worse than like a dog treatment literally after the first couple of weeks. why the first couple of weeks because they were trying to buy me back with their money. when i didnt oblige their attitudes took a u-turn" unquote
so thats so much to what we think is our "comfort zone"
on a personal front, whatever i say cannot be of console lest i manage to find a job for you in your place (which i cant obviously in your locale)
been on this road myself on a couple of occassions and thats when you feel its a broken life (support from family is all you need i assure you)
its just those times and all falls in place soon.
you had mentioned of an interview you plan to attend soon.
all the very best for the position (not filled since the past year)
Good luck, Eric.
I know you will bounce back in no time at all with your stellar skill set. Your efforts for the Slackware are much appreciated and have helped me on occasions too numerous to count. I hope you can still find time for Alien Pastures. It's a fun and informative read.
In fact, Slackdocs was vital in getting UEFI boot working again this evening after a BIOS flash update on an X99 mobo. That was exciting...who knew that the only config setting not kept was the EFI info. It broke PXE boot too so I had to rummage for the DVD. Fun times.
So take your time to job hunt. As a chemist (environmental and pharmaceutical), I've been through a few layoff scenarios (er are near the same age). I have found that it is good to shake things up a bit with a sudden job hunt. The mental exercise is invigorating. Not to mention the weight loss from all the energy expenditure.
Don't worry about the youngsters being competition: They are mostly narcissistic putzes! True skill and experience still matter (or not in the USA: we have Trump. That to me is far scarier than employment!)
Edit: I'm not sure about job interviews in Holland but, saying "salam, I am Alien Bob" is enough to get a perfect job here.
IF one Iranian company will manage to enroll Mr. Eric Hameleers, I guess that will be a News huge enough to The President to give a live speech on all Iranian Television Channel's about the imminent sky-rocketing of the Iranian IT.
And probably will appear a new fatwa about that even some select Christians still could have four wifes -legally, and unnumbered concubines, all of whatever religion, for fundamental contributions to Iranian technology...
No offense, just saying...

Since all of my current machines are running Slackware, to me, Slackware is Slackware plus quite a lot of Eric's packages. First thing I do when installing a new version (after the initial install) is to go get those of Eric's packages that (to _my_ mind) are absolutely essential for _my_ idea of a working system.
Eric - thank you ever so much for what you have done and what you will still do. If appreciation could be turned into money - you would be a rich man.
Eric, sorry for that. When you are a number in the payroll of a multinational you have to be prepared from day one to be "re-balanced" at any time. Your skills and performance simply don't matter. That's part of the game. Life goes on. Good luck
Eric, I hope you find your new job ASAP. Have you looked at Huwawei they have interesting data-center solutions that surely require skilled people like yourself and they have 160,000 employees all round the world ... maybe there's a job for you too.
On an intellectual level I understand the reasons for this. It is nothing personal and it also has nothing to do with the appreciation of my performance [...] Nevertheless, I am affected personally and my close circle is affected too.
Alien Bob communicates that strange feeling you have when been made redundant (as we call it in the UK) very well in the quote above. I'm 7 years into the next stage of my own (teaching) career after being made redundant and it does take a few months to re-orient. Best of luck with it all.
Thanks for that. But I don't expect more from Dracula descendants.
BTW, you know that one even downloading Slackware on Iran do something illegal, considering the USA current laws? You know, The Embargo, the Slackware shipping advanced encryption techniques denied legally to Iran, like OpenSSL, etc...
So, for a underground/illegal Slackware user you are quite vocal, you do not think?

Ahem. My great-grandmother was from Transsylvania. I'm serious.
To note that is about Transylvania, aka "the country on the/full of forests"...
Today Romanian: Transilvania, similar with Latin.
BTW, the Transilvania was also the origin of the Legends about Elves, described as you know, as magical people, with very advanced culture, living on forests and having looooooooong ears.
They still have long ears, trust me! even there is not so much forest on Transilvania, today... :P

Don't bother your small brain. There are many many free and useful things which are illegal either by US or our government. But, I use them as long as their real owners have not banned me. And in this case, Slackware is a free, GPL licensed product.

Surely Slackware is a free, GPL licensed product, BUT because it contains encryption software under USA exports laws, it is denied legally to be exported to Iran, North Korea and some other select countries.
Also, to note that Slackware is a product of Slackware, Inc., an American company, on USA jurisdiction. IF you love Slackware, stop posting there anymore. For any reason.
