Slack 10 and kernel 2.6

Uh... why did I think that slackware 10 was going to include kernel 2.6.n?

Maybe it was this in the changelog back in June:
testing/packages/linux-2.6.7/kernel-generic-2.6.7-i486-1.tgz: Upgraded to
Linux 2.6.7.
testing/packages/linux-2.6.7/kernel-headers-2.6.7-i386-1.tgz: Upgraded to
2.6.7 kernel headers.
testing/packages/linux-2.6.7/kernel-modules-2.6.7-i486-1.tgz: Upgraded to
Linux 2.6.7 kernel modules.
testing/packages/linux-2.6.7/kernel-source-2.6.7-noarch-1.tgz: Upgraded to
Linux 2.6.7 kernel source.

Was it just not ready? I know I just missed something.

Unfortunately (except for the part where I now get a paycheck) I've been kinda out of touch with a new job in 'Gates'ville, so forgive my lagging behind the curve here.

well as you see in what you posted, they did include it in the testing folder on the cd, but
yes a clean install of slack 10 will include the 2.4.x kernel, but just like slack 9.1 it is
2.6 ready, so it will be no problem to update it to 2.6.x ..

It includes it, just not as default, it's on testing subdirectory. There's a document that tells you how to upgrade to it after installing slackware 10

Yeah, I saw that was in testing. But, I thought it meant testing-to-include. I'm really not all that familiar with the nuances of the changelog.

One of these days I'm gonna get around to following one of the kernel upgrade guides and do a successful upgrade. My 3 or 4 attempts so far have failed each time because I still don't have an answer for: "well, you can compile with whatever support you want."

The slackware 2.6.7 precompiled kernel image works great for me. And itīs also quite easy to install:

First you need to get everything from your slack mirrors testing/packages/kernel directory. If I remember correctly you need: the kernel image, headers, source, alsa drivers. Then you just install them with installpkg, it wonīt overwrite your old kernel, it will just install it besides it. Then you have to a. update your lilo to make sure you can boot to the new _and_ the old kernel in case it doesnīt work. b. make an initrd if you are using another filesystem than ext2. I use reiserfs for example and there are great instructions from pat in the /boot/README-initrd (if I remember correctly). I just had to type 1 line and thatīs it.

After you boot you will have to reinstall your nvidia drivers (if you have an nvidia card)
