What enorbet, henca, business_kid, Tonus, LuckyCyborg and Aeterna said ( more or less ).

If you don't need a service, turn it off.

If you don't know what a service script provides, the people here on LQ are pretty helpful

This command will tell show you the executable service scripts:
Code:
ls -lad $(find /etc/rc.d -type f -executable)
When I run it on my machine, it returned these startup scripts:

As others have said, by doing

Code:
chmod a-x /etc/rc.d/rc.nfsd
you will disable services like nfsd.

During the end of the installation, a script /var/log/setup/setup.services is run which lets you choose which services to enable at boot. That script simply does a chmod on files in /etc/rc.d. I can't try it myself as I have modified my installation process not to ask any questions, but in a stock Slackware installation my guess is that it is possible to run that script again to get a nice dialog where you can choose what to start at boot.

Lightbulb Please excuse my stupid idiot n00b thoughts here....

(Thread) TL;dr, but I was amazed at how fast Slackware boots on on a 2006 single core 32bit, because I wasn't using initrd (which I hate and think is ridiculous)! This might be because I was using huge.s (but I n00b don't know; my default run level is three, not four).

Maybe something like poweroff or halt would shut it down faster, or maybe even SysReq magic keys for sync then reboot, short of pulling the power and upsetting fsck!!!

Yes, I know that the people here at LQ are super helpful and I'm super happy with this forum, because the truth is that you spend a lot of time with people and you learn a lot, never in my life had I also had this happen with linux until I installed slackware , it's a whole world and I love it and I'm very grateful to all of you for always helping me.

And now let's get down to business, I have applied the command and if I see services that I don't use, such as wireless because my computer doesn't have Wi-Fi, samba that I don't use, etc., I will investigate what each service is and ask any questions I may have.

When passing the command that you tell me, I get all this:

bash-5.1# ls -lad $(find /etc/rc.d -type f -executable)

Ok thank you very much, with this command that you tell me: [CODE]chmod a-x

Interesting if someone could tell me how to execute what he says so that I get the menu that came out during the installation.

You can tell by running
Code:
ls -F /etc/rc.d
Turn off all server programs you don't use (e.g. mariadb, nfsd, rsyncd, sshd, etc) as they are servers and if you're not using them, why start them? ?//that will speed things up. Also go through rc.S & rc.M and look for wait statements. Back in the day, time was given for stopped disks to spin up to a decent speed, but that's a bit obsolete now. You can change 'wait 5' to 'wait 1' or comment it out.

So, you start a truck load of servers like Apache, MySQL, Postfix, Dovecot, LDAP, NFSD, Avahi and 2 (two) DNS servers just in case, then you lament that the system is slow to boot?

I will give you an E for the configuration of this box.

PS. Lease rc.wireless alone. It does not disturb you.

hahaha, if that happens to me for being a rookie, I'm paying for the hazing, but happy, because I'm learning a lot and best of all I'm having fun.

I'm deactivating like crazy, looking at what I'm doing, of course, but I've already deactivated everything you mention, except avahi, which apparently installs it through libreoffice, which I hardly use, but I have to have it there just in case.

I have seen that there were things that slowed down a lot, for example pcmcia, as far as I know I do not have anything on my pc that is pcmcia and therefore I have deactivated it, I have also deactivated smartd, because I have ssd and that is for hdds, so there is no point in activating it.

Virtualbox I have to have it installed for windows things for my wife's work, but she uses it very very little, so I am deactivating the virtualbox services and I will activate them only when necessary, what I know is deactivating them, but I don't know how to activate them in the future lol

I don't know how to disable the following processes:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 4133 sep 23 13:55 /etc/rc.d/init.d/vboxautostart-service
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6498 sep 23 13:55 /etc/rc.d/init.d/vboxballoonctrl-service
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 23360 sep 23 13:55 /etc/rc.d/init.d/vboxdrv
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6441 sep 23 13:55 /etc/rc.d/init.d/vboxweb-service
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1642 sep 21 17:04 /etc/rc.d/init.d/piavpn

I tried to install piavpn through wireguard, but it is not compatible with slackware, not wireguard, but piavpn. So I have it configured and it works with openvpn, so that process is not necessary for me, but like the rest I don't see a way to remove them.

Then there are some very curious processes that I don't know what they mean:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18050 ene 27 2022 /etc/rc.d/rc.S
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 13230 nov 12 2021 /etc/rc.d/rc.M
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3303 abr 23 2021 /etc/rc.d/rc.K
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1649 abr 24 2021 /etc/rc.d/rc.4
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 10077 nov 10 2021 /etc/rc.d/rc.6

scripts files are readable, you can find what they do just by reading the top comments
example
Code:
less /etc/rc.d/rc.atalk
# Start/stop/restart the netatalk daemon
...
(press q)
Code:
man netatalk
NETATALK(8) 3.1.12 NETATALK(8)

NAME
netatalk - Netatalk AFP server service controller daemon
(press q)
I don't need running Apple File server, so
Code:
chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.atalk

do you really need inet1 and inet2? Do you really need fuse and fuse3?

Yep. I know, it's hard to believe for someone who does not use Slackware.

Yes, I use slackware, it's the only thing I use, I have linux mint just in case and windows because my wife sometimes needs it, but I exclusively use slackware.
