A cheque would be fine if I had an address to send it to (plus a name for the payee of course). US readers might like to know that our banks have been trying for some time to phase cheques out, but it raised such a fury that they had to back-pedal.

Alternately, if there were bank account details, one could set up a standing order. But I can quite understand if you don't want to make those public!

I think that you should add (as AlienBob) "Donate with a card". I don't use Patreon or Paypal because I don't give them my credit card number. I use a system where for every payment I get a different card number usable only for this payment.

How does that work? What do you tell your bank?

At the moment slackware.uk doesn't have it's own bank account. I'll have a look into it, but I'm not sure if a 'project' can get a bank account...

I'm keeping a record of all donations and expenditure for slackware.uk, so even though the payments hit my account they are 'allocated' to the project, not to my personal finances.

Hazel, why don't you just mail (snail mail) Tadgy a money card of some sort that you can buy at your local grocery store? Easy-peasy.

Actually a lot of sites provide a mail address for cheques but will only accept them in dollars. As this is a UK site, a sterling cheque should be acceptable.

Ah... well, it's simple enough for Tadgy, who should probably trust you because you're "just a little old lady", to PM or email you with his mail drop so that you can just send the check.

But, of course, Tadgy may not want to do that. There are some "little ol' ladies" out here on the Internets who quite possibly may be serial killers, actually.

Actually this is quite a serious topic and an old beef of mine. There are quite a few sites that I would like to donate to and can't because they only accept plastic or cheques drawn in dollars on US banks. For example, I do quite a bit of genealogical research and would love to be able to use JRI Poland, but they expect a donation from users (which is quite reasonable for all the work they do) and won't provide a method of payment that I am prepared to use.

I have played around with the idea of getting one of those preloaded debit cards, but there's a monthly fee for all the ones I know of, which just wouldn't be economic for occasional use.

Yes, I've know what you're saying here, Hazel. I've found PayPal to be the easiest solution for paying or receiving. However, I don't trust that corporate entity any more than I do any other.

Would you prefer to send a cheque, or a direct bank transfer?
