Question rt2500 wireless config

Hey...

the following is a copy of a thread on fedoraforum.org... i've been tyring to get my wireless network sorted on linux and its just getting depressing... I think it really is just a matter of entering a few settings into ifcfg-wlan0 but i don't know which settings to put where.. i have a screenshot of what my router says the settings should be but this site won't let me add it so if your willing to help a desperate newbie, then msg me at lr96144@hotmail.com and i can send u the file...

if you can help i really will be grateful!

Cheers

This is the contents of etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-wlan0 my net connection worked last night and then i started my machine up this morning and it has promptly stopped again.

# RaLink Ralink RT2500 802.11 Cardbus Reference Card
DEVICE=wlan0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
DHCP_HOSTNAME=192.168.2.1
IPADDR=192.168.2.2
DOMAIN=wyrd
HWADDR=00:10:a7:2c:2f:ac
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=yes
GATEWAY=213.249.232.254
TYPE=Wireless
IPV6INIT=yes
ESSID=xxx
CHANNEL=11
MODE=Auto
RATE=Auto

i simply can't think of any settings i've changed or anything since it worked... thats just stroppy! Could essid broadcast have anything to do with whether linux could find the network when the ESSID is correct... or could it be related to UPnP?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
oh forgot to mention... the error output when i use 'system-config-netowork' and try to activate the network is;
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.

Determining IP information for wlan0...PING 192.168.2.1 (192.168.2.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 192.168.2.1 ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 0 received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 2998ms
, pipe 4
failed.

cheers for reading guys

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still haven't been able to get the internet up and running at all today... iwpriv output is

Quote:
wlan0 Available private ioctl :
set (8BE2) : set 1024 char & get 0
bbp (8BE3) : set 1024 char & get 1024 char
mac (8BE5) : set 1024 char & get 1024 char

iwconfig output is

Quote:
wlan0 RT2500 Wireless ESSID:"Wyrdweb"
Mode:Managed Frequency=2.462GHz Bit Rate:11Mb/s
RTS thrff Fragment thrff
Encryption keyff
Link Quality:60 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

and i've tried changing most of the settings and now i've got myself totally confused with wireless settings... i've attached a screenshot of what the network config is according to the router. What is it i need to be entering into ifcfg-wlan0 to stop getting the messgaes (see previous posts) and finally get on the internet.

I would like to add encryption on the network but my housemate only has the windows wireless utility in windows xp service pack2 to edit his wireless config and he can't seem to make the network work using wep or wpa... will i there be any problems being on a network with windows XP (my housemate) and is it going to cause problems if FC3 connects through the same ip address as windowsXP does on this machine... should my router be assigning the ipaddress by the machine or by the OS?

As ever, any help available from anyone would be appreciated... just remember to keep it simple Thanks in advance

Zebe
