ASUS EeePC 1005PE: Impossible to install Linux from USB, hangs with boot prompt and "SYSLINUX" message

Hi all,

I'm in the process of trying to install Mint Mate from USB on my Asus EeePC 1005PE and get an error message (I can't even use the live version). I get the following message which hangs on boot from USB:

Quote:
SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008-07-15 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvin
...with a prompt "boot:"

The version I'm trying to install is linuxmint-18-mate-32bit.iso from USB.

Can you try to install from USB/DVD without EFI?

Sorry, don't know what EFI is.
It's a Netbook, so no DVD installation possible.

Couple wild-guesses: improperly burned usb? How did you create it?
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=90663
2008-9, so not uefi luckily Yup, probably bad usb 'burn'.

TMI digging:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2043820
https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...-stick-870921/
Try this web-search: syslinux hang at boot prompt
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1961...slinux-message
Does boot: respond to a <tab> ? Anything echo? Probably not/dead, in this case.

The problem might be that the 32-bit is not working due to UEFI boot, which works only with 64-bit. Can you please try 64-bit?

And, you can use Rufus for creating USB. I think it is more reliable: https://rufus.akeo.ie/

I've changed the title of this post from "Mint Mate 32-bit Impossible to install from USB, hangs with boot prompt and "SYSLINUX" message" to "ASUS EeePC 1005PE: Impossible.." because I've tried again with 64-bit Xfce version of mate as well as Lubuntu and on 3 different pendrives.

Nothing seems to be working these days (see all of my recent posts!)

Any other ideas?

RM

New clue.
In addition to the original message:
Quote:
SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008-07-15 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2008 H. Peter Anvin
Additional message when trying from Lubuntu:
Quote:
Missing parameter in configuration file

Just to clarify, it doesn't seem to be a problem specific to Mint, but rather to Asus EeePC 1005PE and Debian/Linux version.

Initial problem solved, but still a problem with installation.
I simply typed in "help" and got a list of help commands F1, F2, etc. and then a boot prompt that said press "Enter" to boot... and it did.
I got the live version of Lubuntu.
I didn't try the same with mint, but I imagine it would be the same.
Errors during installation, impossible to install...
The challenge continues!
