I have an older SCSI workstation running Fedora Core 3 and I cannot boot it up anymore. It is not even getting to the point where I get anything on the monitor, just that it's in power save mode. The monitor acts as if it was not plugged in.
However, the power turns on, the hard drive turns on and gets warm and is spinning and the mother board light turns on, the fans spin.
Could it be the video card failed? I have a 6-year old Matrox Millenium video card. I resat it a few times to no avail.
If no beeps at all, the system didn’t even get as far as the power on self test (POST). You are on the right track about trying to reseat all cards and power connections. If you moved anything recently, recheck that connection(s).
If you got a single beep, the hardware posted and the problem is probably something like a failed hard drive. Try booting into FC3 rescue mode with CD-1 or the Rescue CD. Or even better, try booting with a Live-CD like Knoppix and you may get some good diagnostic info during the boot process.
If you are getting a beep pattern, you can look up what the beep pattern means on the manufacturer’s web site.
It does not beep. I don't recall if it ever beeped during bootup.
But listening closely to the hard drive, I hear the usual noise patterns as if it was trying to boot up.
Also, should mention I had 2 HD in it and one failed a few weeks ago.
When I opened the case yesterday, I saw that one of the fans stopped working, maybe that's what contributed to this current problem - overheating the present HD, or maybe the video card, as the case might be.
