One of the best things about slack is if you follow the instructions that come with whatever package you want to install, then 99.9% of the time it just works.

instructions?
is it the HOWTOs you're talking about or the man pages?

anyway my vote is for slack.
a year ago, it'd have been mandrake.

anyway, console lovers... do u use lynx?

If you ever had X working in one linux distro, then it will work in every contempary distro. gui10, most pieces of software come with at least generic install instructions and a lot come with comprehensive ones, if you read them first then that narrows down the possable problems and often those that are left will already be documented by other users and mentioned either on the developers web site or at sites like this. Remember everybody.... google/linux is your friend.....

for the record i'm still posting this up on my friend's windows box.

i still haven't got X working. mainly coz i'm learning about lotsa cool stuff on the console. i'll come to the X config later.

the decision i made about X:

as motivation... i treat it as i do not deserve to use X until i know how to set it up right. this way, i'll learn how to do it better. well it's been proven on RH that it can be done with my current hardware config, so it can be done on slack and freebsd. i'll work out how when i am more adept at the command line.

thks for all the help aussie(with regards to all other posts as well). if i come across a problem again, i'll holler.

Linux Newbie learing Slackware

Ok I want to learn Linux and did not attempt Mandrake b/c I use win98SE and am not interested in a straight forward GUI OS. Slackware8 installed easily enough. BTW I prefer loadlin as not to even mess with MBR - I need to have at least one OS operable. As for GUI's U can install all the desktop GUI's your heart may desire and play with all of them. So for all you Slackware lovers can anyone help me setup a dialup internet connection in Slackware8 to MSN ISP service? I have read plenty and still no luck. I have ppp 2.3.7 and pppd 2.4.1 and pppsetup 1.98 - ISA Creative modem blaster flash56II DI5601-1 irq: 05 I/O: 03E8h - 03EFH the online instructions and tried to follow them but when I type ppp-go at commandline I only get connect script failed. I hav changed every file under /etc/ppp dir I cld find
My /var/log/messages is getting full ??? How do I empty it? I can't run pppsetup again it exits after second screen where the syntax of telephone number is described??? Its been over a month. Can someone email me an enumerated and summary of steps I must follow to configure my slackware8 for MSCHAP80?
Happy New Year Everyone!

I've seen a few questions lately from people with working modems unable to cannect to MSN....I think the answer is to get an ISP that isn't owned by microsoft...

Although it seems to be the easiest thing to do. I can not afford to change MSN ISP this year. I have seen documentation on MSCHAP80 in Slackware8. I just don't have the referrence point to make sense of it all. I shld be getting a bk soon that will hopefully address pppsetup configuration senerios. Thanks

Well for my computer:

EPoX 8KHA+ KT266A
Athlon XP 1.47 @ whatever i feel like at the moment.
256MB DDR Ram by Crucial.
Gainward GeForce3
LinkSys LNE100TX v.4
SB Live! Value (not 5.1).

Mandrake is MUCH faster than RedHat, even the bootup time is alittle faster which many people claim is SLUGGISH under Mandrake 8.1. I am going to give Slack a go, i'll tell you guys if its any faster than Mandrake.

Slackware newb

Just my 2 cents - my last run in with Linux was Red Hat 6.1 way back when. Decided to go dual boot WinXP/Slackware 8.0. Got the ISO from the Canadian Tucows and ran the install. I love linux but hate it at the same time. Spent quite a bit of time getting things up and running.

I had no problems with dual booting once I realized that /sbin/lilo needs to be run after any change to lilo.conf. Works like a dream now.

I have a USB Logitech MouseMan dual optical - decided that I would change to 2.4.5 since supposedly it had better USB support. Even though I have never recompiled a kernel before, I managed to figure it out (note to other newbs - run 'make menuconfig' MUCH nicer than make config... ). Adding the USB drivers was a simple change to rc.modules (something like that).

X server. That was very exciting. Took a lot of time to figure out how to set it up. I kept running xf86config which did nothing for me. then ran XFree86 -configure. Ahhhhh.. no problems. X server started up beautifully. I love KDE.

In summary, I think Slackware is better for those adventurous newbies that know enough about yer computer to be dangerous, and you want to learn to be REALLY dangerous. I'm on my way. Probably not recommended if you have NO unix experience, unless you have an introductory book (Slackware Unleashed or something).

And hum.. For sure different distribution use different lilo... maybe it's just because slackware use an older one but it is different...
First look at GUI... Slackware is simplier than mandrake... No? But that's not a proof right?

So look how they work... slack lilo use lilo.conf as list of "what to boot" so it is easier to change (welll easier if you use prompt command)
Mandrake? Dont know what it uses but it's not lilo.conf... try it,modify your lilo.conf manually, it will not change anything... Mandrake use something else dont ask me whay I never found it (but if you know tell me!!!) but it seem to be less "dangerous" to the MBR.
Umm...after you editted the mandrake lilo file and saved it as root. did you run
/sbin/lilo
?????

this will commit the changes.

Either way I still need Windows because I like gaming - anyone know where you can get a Counter-Strike client for Linux

So Mandrake or Slack?
Half life works perfectly in wine or winex. for me it runs at full speed and the only issues are involved with the main menus etc blinking out and back on...

Then you just install counterstrike as per normal.

newbie on mdk 8.1

So since I just bought the retail box of mandrake 8.1 at wal-mart, do I use it & get used to linux for a few months and then get something less pretty, like slack? By learning on mdk 8.1, am I short-changing myself by not learning some behind-the-scenes stuff? I bought 8.1 cuz I was interested in linux, and I'm no MS lover.

I thought I could just learn some basic stuff, like installing rpms, tars, and working in kde, doing some command line stuff for maybe like a few months. Then I should get another distro?

FWIW, I think you did exactly the right thing, pekuekfir. I tried RH6.something over a year ago and found it tough to the extent of giving up. Mandrake was easier than Windows to install and has really given me the platform (er, no pun intended) to learn Linux. I've since done Slack and found it reasonably easy, but *only* because of Mandy giving me a start. Now I'm at the point where I have a Linux firewall and am about to ditch my Win 2k server. I hardly ever boot my dual boot desktop PC into Windows anymore.

<cliché mode on>

Horses for courses, innit?

<cliché mode off>

Cheers,

Rob
