Okay, suits me. I've always thought (and I think most will agree with me on this) that our models of physics aren't complete. Indeed, there may be a law that we have for ages thought to be true, that is in fact false.

Anyways, I really don't want to continue this discussion anymore. Perhaps I shouldn't have even brought it up again here.

(I hate constantly being the one that bumps this thread...)

I just got automatic screen brightness adjustment working on my laptop! It now raises/lowers the brightness when it's on AC/battery, respectively.

But not fully; I can't seem to figure out a way to make the shortcut keys bring the brightness up/down...

I would just create a shortcut in the Xfce keyboard shortcuts that assigns "echo -n <brightness> /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness" to the brightness up/down Fn keys, but you need root priveleges to write to that file.

I just wish I could get my netbook to automatically adjust the screen brightness to the lowest setting on boot. I am using some of the experimental Intel driver stuff tho so I am not even sure how its controlled. I control it via bios enabled FN key sequence.

I agree about bumping this thread.

Does the laptop not have a function key to adjust the brightness as well?

And finally, I am realizing I suck at building large software. Trying to build KDE 4.4.4 from the Slackbuilds for 4.4.3, but I think my build machine's install is broke. So when I get a chance I'm going to re-install and try again.

HDD just stopped working for no reason; had to turn off the netbook by taking the battery out... Very strange. I just tested it thoroughly and it passed every one with flying colors.
Of course, I would have been real mad if it did actually fail, because it's still only half a year old. This Seagate gives me some scares sometimes. It clunks around sometimes so loudly it startles me. Nothing bad as of yet has happened, so I'l keep my fingers crossed.

Ooh, and when talking about Woodstock 1969 earlier today, I totally pulled off using the longest word** in English in a casual conversation (Antidisestablishmentarianism). Truly a very satisfying moment.

Lastly, I am wondering why the left side of my keyboard has lost some of it's responsiveness. I mean, three keys (1,q,w) have been getting troublesome as of late.

And yes, I was talking about the girl I like in my last post.

Did you practice saying it in the mirror first? I trip up at the 7th syllable every time!

No, she goes to my school. She isn't a LQ member.
(That would be really cool though.)

Actually, that's what I was referring to when I said "Fn keys". The "metakeys" that would ordinarily be Fn+<up arrow> and Fn+<down arrow> don't adjust the brightness like they're supposed to, and I can't think of a way to make them work...

That's funny. My brightness keys work in Arch 64-bit XFCE. The keys are different: <Fn><F4> dims while <Fn><F5> increases the brightness.

Yeah that is odd, considering I'm on x86_64, too with Xfce...

What model of laptop do you have? Mine's a Samsung R580.

Mostly compal, It's a barebones frankenstein thing.

EDIT: It's about 2 years old, still not bad though.

My brightness/volume Fn keys have worked with everything I have tried...

-- Acer Aspire One D250

Perhaps there is a utility for XFCE on Arch like there is for GNOME on Ubuntu? That may help.

Works in Slackware64, KDE and Debian Sid, Gnome. That's all I have installed on this machine currently.

Posting from slackware + kde 4.4.4. The slackbuilds for 4.4.3 work fine with the removal of the patch for kdenetwork. I've just installed it, so I can't say whether or not it works well this way or not.
