If you run 'pavucontrol', do you see it under the menu item 'Input Devices' after you insert the microfone plug in the socket? Try to click 'Port:' to see what ports are available.
Doesn't it work then? Does it say '(plugged in)' or '(unplugged)? If you talk to the microphone, does the volume meter move with your talking? There is also a speaker icon. Is the speaker icon on a grey background (muted)? Click to unmute and you get a blue slider below. You can adjust the slider now, and that should also have an effect on the volume meter when you talk.

Doesn't work nor says plugged-in nor unplugged nor has volume moving, and it's not muted. I said it was working before I turned off the rc scripts, so there's no reason to go over the basics--I already know all this.

Oh, sorry. But /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa would not usually do anything else than "alsactl restore": set starting values from /var/lib/alsa/asound.state. Which pavucontrol should also be able to set. So, only one basic question more: For the microphone, where is the blob on the volume slider? Maybe at the minimum value (Silence)? If you move it to right, does the volume meter now move with your talking?

You mean knob? Maximum (can't be moved further right) and the slider is 100%.
It's also plugged-in to the correct socket. This happened in the past and might also be a temporary driver/kernel problem that will be fixed on reboot or upgrade.
It was getting irksome with zoom, so I have updated to 2024-05-05 today. Before doing so, I removed /etc/pulse & /etc/alsa and I appear to have much better behaviour.
