What version of LinuxCNC are you currently running? What version of the operating system are you running? I assume you are running one of the ready to use packages for either Ubuntu or debian. The update manager should notify of updates to LinuxCNC but do not update the operating system except for security updates.

The Ubuntu repositories: You can install Linux CNC and its drivers from the Ubuntu repositories using the following command:
sudo apt install linuxcnc

At work I use a Windows controlled JDSquared plasma table. Always thought it would be cool to smooth out the workflow with linux and scripting skills. Though it might do the opposite of smooth.
