about sums it up. Upon download of more then one copy of Zenwalk and burns to cd-r with Roxio Easy Media Creator 8.05 one error message is seen. "missing operating system"
At this point I am wondering if it will take several downloads and burns to see a working copy installed. When burning other isos for Fedora, Gentoo, Mepis, ubuntu, and Knoppix Live all saw good burns to disk. Along with some other newbies others are running into the same error message. The download site is a link off of http://www.zenwalk.org/ seen at http://www.zenwalk.org/modules/tinyc...index.php?id=1
Is there a MD5 checksum tool for this distro or do you simply compare file and folder at $URL (cannot post urls, not enough postings here
At all linux distributions should be a program md5sum. Just fetch the md5-file named zenwalk-2.8.iso.md5, put it in the same diretory as your zenwalk-iso and type
Code:
[stell @ nexxus:~/temp]% md5sum -c zenwalk-2.8.iso.md5
zenwalk-2.8.iso: OK
That's one thing that hasn't been found at http://www.zenwalk.org/modules/tinyc...index.php?id=1 If you go to the Zenlive page you will readily see the md5 sum link right next to the one for the iso image. This seems to be one thing for sure this missing there. I've been reaching a dead end on this so far. Is there another download site? Several trying this latest release are seeing the same error.
oddly enough i had the exact same result of missing OS, however i didnt install lilo like i should have, was planning on changing hard drive boot order to choose. after letting lilo install it worked flawless, am on it right now.
Did you have Lilo on the drive or on 3 1/2"? I just wonder if Grub would work as well there. Once it is up and running I'll simply work with the unbuntu boot manager. That worked with the 98/Core 4 installation I had in the old case. I was just wondering if the 2.6 md5 sum would work on this release?
First I will see if I can get lilo to do the same here. I first have to get brushed up on bash commands again in order to start all over again. That should be an allnight project.
Well to the latest surprise the main problem was due to the burning softwares tried along with initial downloads of both Zenwalk first and later Zenlive when the same error message was seen. The last try at Zenlive saw a fully working live distro there except for internet access. For some reason the dsl account couldn't be set. But that was also seen with the Knoppiz live cd.
After someone advised BurnOnCD/DVD the shareware version proved invaluable when the success was seen with the Zenlive. When this was tried on Zenwalk the installer came up fast for the first time. Fdisk not cfdisk was used to format the root and swap on the intended drive. Several times the error seen about damaged packages with the click ok to continue anyways message was seen. A fresh download will be tried again to complete the installation that hung when setting up the network. The reinstall with a good burn should finally see some good results.
One question here is the new support for reading off of NTFS partitions. The slave hard drive is being used for storage and backup of the XP primary drive on a 135gb primary without an OS. A 1gb root and 30gb swap was seen when the installer didn't detect GPart's creation of a 2.5gb intended swap partition. The 30gb was to be an extended for storage and backups. The option to mount the single primary on hda or hdb1 came up and that was given the no at this point. Can you later mount the hdb1 for reading off of that NTFS partition? The good news is that Gag will be used to dual OS without the need to install lilo.
EDIT: Now the problem is preparing the Grub not Lilo floppy in order to install the GNU Grub to load Zenwalk for the first time. The initial installation saw errors there. A fresh download and new burn of the iso is ready for use if problems are found.
UPDATE: After repeated downloads and attempts to install Zenwalk from new cds burned with different prgrams the installer repeatedly saw similar mounting errors and the lilo installer refused to start. New partitions were also created for the custom installation. The 1gb root partition with 2.5gb swap part and 29.5gb extended still saw the "some packages can not be installed due to the lack of space" on the last attempt.
First hard drive config:
HDa1 = Windows XP 250gb primary
HDb1 = 135gb NTFZ storage parition
HDb2 = 1gb root for Zenwalk
HDb3 = 2.5gb swap for Zenwalk + ?
HDb4 = 30gb extended at present
HDb5 = 64.5gb unpartitioned for anything so far
Current hard drive config:
HDa1 = Windows XP 250gb primary
HDb1 = 35gb RC1 or ReactOS
HDb2 = 10gb root for Zenwalk
HDb3 = 3.5gb swap for Zenwalk
HDb4 = 195gb NTFS storage partition
Zenwalk install to HDb2 successful. Lilo installation fails. Creation of boot floppy fails.

Mandriva/Zenwalk dual boot on secondary or Vista RC2? With the removal of RC1 and Zenwalk and Mandriva with Grub set to one question here is whether or not Grub will load Zenwalk 3.0? Grub had a good install to the secondary drive's mbr and will have no problem loading Mandriva. Zenwalk is ready to go onto the third partition following Mandriva's swap there.
