I needed to do some testing of Oracle 11g on my personal Linux machine, and I couldn't get it to work on Gentoo. It installed fairly easily with the docs on the Ubuntu site.

Trust me, it was out of professional necessity, and not personal choice.

I would have kept Gentoo and installed Ubuntu either as dual-boot or in Virtualbox.

So far no issues. I do notice performance degradation when making large file transfers from an external USB drive.

I was looking at 10.10. Any reason to upgrade? The Ubuntu site does not seem to give any valid reasons for making the jump, but I'm a fairly new Ubuntu person.
Welcome to ubuntu

That probably would have been wiser, but after several hours and frustration one tends to act rashly.

Ubuntu is interesting. I installed it on a friends netbook a few years ago, and decided to give it a go. I guess change is good, even if I fight it tooth and nail generally.

Nope, mine definitely not. Yours, maybe, but if Ubuntu is your paradise, why are you opening so many threads about other distros?

So, so easy

Ubuntu has been so easy to use. It was my first linux. I had big plans, including running a tv tuner, which is often difficult in linux. The Ubuntu community is quick to respond and help with problems. To be honest, I have tried a couple of other distros on different partitions, but I always come back. The others just don't seem to make things as simple.

I wouldn't think that this is a compliment.
