Just for gigles I ran;
Code:
tom@debian:~$ dmesg > dmesg.log
With my external enclosure attached.

Should have run it from there with the internals disabled in bios as the resulting file /home/tom/dmesg.log is a little long (1733 lines).

Extracted three snips that I only partially comprehend but may be of use to you for comparison. They are separated by a space. The last includes the bios output for the 4 sata links on the MB of which I am using 2 (1+3). Too lazy to take them out.
Code:

This is the hardware listed in my sig. Using the bios version A10 that has not been flashed since I got it and the bios date to March of 08.

Widget:

Your dmesg command reports what a healthy boot up should have respecting usb drivers. Both uhci_hcd and ehci_hcd are loaded and registered. In my case ehci_hcd loads only when I have 2 Gigs or less of RAM. When I have 3 Gigs, only uhci_hcd loads. The other reports an error (error -19). On this, I need an answer and solution from the experts.

BIOS upgrade on Precision 670

George: We are upgrading those machines with older BIOS versions due to an USB error where USB mouse stops working when running RHEL4. The BIOS upgrade fixes this but without a correct Linux binary we have to do it manually with the windows binary (booting from a DOS-floppy).

If the Linux binary is corrected we could automate the process and do it remote. 30 machines are in need of the upgrade and will now be executed by our servicedesk people in the coming days instead.

Interesting.

Makes me think that you really should check your BIOS version, and update it if you arent running the newest BIOS.

No problem.

BTW, one suggestion- Add your launchpad question link, and any other links (like your thread at the ubuntu forums) here. Porbably good to add it to the end of the thread, and to your 1st post on this thread (at the end so that its current, in the 1st post so people can find the links easily later). It could help you get better results and information.

Casacade9:

Thanks for the info. I'm going to check my BIOS version against the one that is on the DELL site for my machine and do the upgrade as necessary.

And yes, this is a good idea to include in my posts here the links from the Ubuntu and Launchpad forums related to my problem. Will do it right away.

Cascade 9:
My BIOS was old, and then I flashed for the latest version (A07). But it didn't solve the problem, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

Problem is solved. One of the folks from AskUbuntu showed me how to install the 11.10 kernel in my Ubuntu LTS, and with the new kernel, the problem of low speed disappeared. Evidently, there is an issue with 10.04 when you increase RAM, that makes it not to load the ehci_hcd driver (USB) which causes such ports to run very slow.

Thank you very much. That is great to know.

I may run Debian but my wife still uses Ubuntu 10.04.

I've seen people upgrade RAM on 10.04 from 2GB to 3GB+ and not have the issues you had.

IMO it was most likely either odd settings in your kernel, or a kernel/hardware incompatibility.

That may be so, but probably they don't run their OS from an external hard drive connected to a USB port, as I do. The issue apparently affects only the usb ports. It's just a matter of checking if the ehci_hcd driver loads or not. If you run your OS in an internal hard drive, probably you won't notice the problem. I haven't tested that, though.
