Q. What is the difference between OHCI and UHCI ?

A. OHCI or Open Host Controller Interface is the Host Controller standard used by the Keyspan USB Card. UHCI or Universal Host Controller Interface is the Host Controller standard used by Intel.

modprobe locks up (not whole computer just that window) trying to remove ohci_hcd or pwc.
(didnt on suse 9.3) idont have an intel board or cpu (via) so this may be related to my hotplug problem (or not)

The versions of SuSE I've run always had (1)6 port EHCI driver and (3)2 port UHCI drivers for usb. EHCI support 480Mb USB 2 and UHCI supports 12Mb USB 1.1. I have 6 physical ports and belive that the the assignment of EHCI or UHCI to a port depends on the device connected. There is a GUI called usbview that provides the most info I've seen on your USB ports and what's connected to them. Google should help you find it. I successfully use a wide variety of USB devices that all function well with SuSE 10.0.

matti,

egrep has some additional metacharacters that I find useful. Also, some characters don't need to be escaped.
I used egrep because I wanted an expression ( pattern1|pattern2|pattern3 ) which will match any of the patterns.

My desktop is Intel based, yet I need to have ohci_hcd loaded for a usb external drive to be recognized. I'm not at my desktop now. My HP (AMD 64) laptop has these modules loaded:

hpamd64:/home/prog/Documents/ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1 # lsmod | egrep '(hid|usb|[oe]hci)'
usbserial 34800 0
usbhid 47520 0
ehci_hcd 35592 0
ohci_hcd 22536 0
usbcore 132976 5 usbserial,usbhid,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
ohci1394 35204 1 video1394
ieee1394 117112 3 video1394,ohci1394,raw1394

I currently don't have an externel hard drive plugged in. My mouse is plugged into usb. ( SuSE 9.3 x86_64 )

any tips for modprobe locking up? i cant remove pwc or the *_hci usb drivers. i appear to have all loaded (ohci, ehci and uhci)

this is what lead me into kernel modules configuration trying to remove certain modules then doing a make. then make install modules to sort of go the super long way around dynamically loading/unloading them. im able modprobe -r other modules successfully. just seems to be usb stuff.
theres a graphical usb thing in suse that attempts to load then just disappears. i was able to use the graphical interups screen to see usb using ir1 5, (i tried enable/disable irq usage of usb in bios).

tanks!
