Donb, if you run 'suseplugger' (all lowercase) from a terminal, you don't need a response assuming that you get no error. Try to see if the process is running by typing this at the terminal:
ps -ef | grep suseplugger
you have to see a process called 'suseplugger' (there should be two processes one is for the 'grep suseplugger' and the other one is the plugger itself). If you have it, USB drives should work fine.
I'm no expert by far, and can only relate what I see & do ... I see no 'program' SusePlugger.
I open My Computer ... I plug my USB stick in, a message Window pops up "SUSE Hardware Detection New USB Stick detected" in that small window is "Configure Open Ignore" ... I usually just press open.
I then get a new Window exactly the same, but viewing the stick, as My computer.
The original My Computer Window shows my USB stick also.
When I'm done, I just pull out the stick ... no problems so far doing that ... then close both windows.
As I said ... I'm no expert, I just do it that way and was pleasently surprised at how easy it was.
I would like to report the same problem. No SuSEPlugger in the system tray, running suseplugger from terminal does nothing. The hardware automounts fine, but I don't get the "autoplay" screen because SuSEPlugger isn't running.
I've tried installing gnome-applets and I've tried removing the susepluggerrc files in /opt/kde3 and in ~/.kde. No luck so far.
Do a Ctrl-Esc and the process window comes up. On my 10.0 install, suseplugger and susewatcher are together at the end of the list. There is no longer a tray icon because SuSE 10.0's auto-mount is different from prior releases and the tray icon serves no purpose.
Okay, but I lose the autoplay screen when I pop in a CD, DVD, or USB disk. I tried deleting the susepluggerrc files, but I haven't been able to recover the default behavior.
I'm sure there's a way to do what you wish but I fear your solution is past my expertise. Mounting devices have been greatly changed from prior releases. The playing field has changed for us all. Keep the faith, the truth will out or in true Linux culture all will be made well for users.
Thanks Trident for your terminal commands. It appears that both the processes for suseplugger are running, but still no detection of any USB device. Not my Zip, printer or Panasonic camera which is native to suse 10.0. The USB controller is detected and shows up in yast, but no USB devices in the USB devices window, and nnly my floppy and hard drive in my computer. No hot plug detection when the device is plugged in, and no detection when the computer is booted. I am exactly where I was two weeks ago. If it is not the suseplugger then what can it be?
Have you tried opening a console window - entering su and root password - entering lsusb
lsusb will tell you the usb ports that Linux sees. If a device is detected on the port, an ID # and device vendor name are displayed.
Also there is a GUI ap called usbview -- http://usbview.sourceforge.net that shows much more information. Most of it past my comprehension but perhaps if you post the output of these, someone more versed than I can tell you what's going on.
Tried lsusb and also usb viewer. No device detected with either command. At first I thought that suseplugger was not running, but it seems the processes are running, but no devices are detected.Nothing that I try results in the hotplug or coldplug detection of any USB device that I attach. Hopefully someone can assist.
One almost has to wonder if you have a hardware problem. When I get this frustrated with a problem I try a live CD of a different distribution -- say knoppix for example. If it has the same problem, hardware is more likely the problem. Live CDs are available as free ISOs you'll have to burn yourself or even as a CD for a small sum. A live CD is a helpful diagnostic tool.
Fragos was correct. My USB issue was a hardware problem. My HP Visualize machine has a broadcom USB controller chip which is obviously not supported. I put in a USB adapter with a NEC chip and my zip drive is now detected. Thanks to everyone for the help. I should have tried the hardware angle earlier. problem is that the Broadcom controller was detected, but just didn't work
no usb here as well, usb webcam crashes with isoc errors, officejet wont detect at all. both workig fine in suse 9.3 (and 9.2, etc..)
i found info relating to ohci and uhci, something about drivers for the usb, i thought it was my hardware (new as well as the OS10.
i have been struggling with this for 2 wks as well. its been on hold lately.
one thing i did was download kernel source, and mess around with the modules i mentioned in make menuconfig but i really dont know what im doing. some discussions i found said use uhci over ohci (or vice versa, i forget), I TRIED BOTH, nothing.
os10 is NOT what id recommend for a new linux user, all kindsa probs! ive had an absolutely huge list of unrelated problems many still unsolved, the types of problems that havent been related to linux in yrs. luckily i still have my 9.3 box whicj i a, seriously considering using as a backup while i wipe out os10 and put FC4 on, or windows me for more reliability. (kidding, sorta)
