Keeping 3D support disabled will not help, I tried this. You must disable the NVIDIA driver. Start YAST from a text console and select the generic VESA driver (frame buffer). See also hints given by taglass.
This will not give what you payed for, but you can have a stable running system. I hope NVIDIA will realize soon that their driver is not compatible with most recent kernel. My SUSE 9.3 has 2.6.11. I have another distro (Kanotix-8) with kernel 2.6.9, it works fine with some flavour of NVIDIA driver. So I think the problem with the NVIDIA driver starts with kernel 2.6.10 or 2.6.11.
The problem with the vanished "Shutdown" and "Reboot" buttons in the KDE Logout screen has surely to do with the NVIDIA problem, but the impossibility to recover from this is a SUSE problem (my opinion).
The latest driver should work for 2.6.11.x kernels. But according to different sources the driver you're getting from yast is of version 5336, while the newest is 7174 (never installed the yast driver, only the official, so I can't confirm this)

I can only speak for myself, at the moment, but the problems that I have listed in this string are happening with the latest version of the driver from nVidia.
I'm going to experiment some more soon, just as soon as I figure out how to backup my configuration so I don't have to redo it all again if I have to reinstall.
Originally posted by leadazide Sometimes you may have to start SaX...twice - the first start fails, but then it works.
I have started it and restarted ad infinitum with the same exact results. And as I have mentioned before, this problem did not occur with SUSE 9.2. So, I am led to believe that SUSE 9.3 Pro uses a different kernel which is not compatible with the latest nVidia drivers (or vice versa).
I don't believe this is a SUSE problem, to be honest. I think it's a nVidia problem or, perhaps, a SaX problem. Either way, it's not within my technical skills to fix on my own. I have no choice but to wait until someone else who is much smarter than me can deal with it.

It should, but it doesn't ! As I pointed out before, I tried both ways, YAST and the install procedure for the 7174 driver. The result was exactly the same. After replacing the NVIDIA driver with the generic VESA driver, my system runs stable. Only the little damage to the KDE Logout screen is left and unsolved.
Some days ago a came across a discussion somewhere on the web (can't find it anymore). The discussion said the problem between NVIDIA driver and recent 2.6.x kernels has to do with stack problems/incompatibilities. So the problem is known but obviously not accepted by those who could work on it.
Alright, it finally happened...again! I think the problem this time was that I made the mistake of putting my computer into suspend mode. It came out of it fine. I shut it down so I could boot into Windows XP for my class. When I got home, I rebooted back into SUSE and there it was! The dreaded XDM login! I have never installed the nVidia drivers this time around, and it is doing this to me.
I am so frustrated with this. I really need to describe this problem on the nvnews.net forum and see what the nVidia people have to say about this.
Okay. Nevermind. I fixed it. I followed Taglass's instructrions on the second page of this thread, and all is now well. WHEW! I was thinking I'd have to reinstall everything, but it does not appear to be the case.
Bro rs33 - did you fix your problem with shutting down SUSE? The one where you were only getting the option to end the current session? I got that, too. And I fixed that as well. In case you didn't already fix it, here's what you need to do.
1. Open YaST.
2. Open the /etc/sysconfig Editor under the System option.
3. Select Desktop, then Display Manager.
4. Select KDM_SHUTDOWN.
5. Change the option to ALL.
6. Click Finish.
I believe this will bring you back to having all of the options to shut down your machine as you are used to. If you already knew this, I apologize for not paying attention to the thread. Also, you shouldn't have to restart your session to get this to work, but you may have to. I don't remember for sure.
Then logged-in again and the nvidia driver splash screen/3D acceleration was enabled.
On another point, would anyone know any decent guidelines/how-to/tips for improving font display on SuSe 9.3 with a 19 inch flat panel monitor. For example, is there a 'best' dpi setting for larger monitors. [mine is currently 85x86 dpi (with command: xdpyinfo | grep resolution)]. Thanks

If you change the display manager back to KDM the shutdown options will be back again.
Somehow Suse changes the default display manager to xdm after the first update.

I can't confirm both statements. Changing back to KDM (as you or taglass described it) will NOT bring the shutdown option back (unfortunately !).
SUSE does not change the default display manager to XDM after the first update. After I updated from 9.0 to 9.3 everthing was fine, I had KDM including shutdown etc. The nasty changes took place when the NVIDIA driver crashed.
SchadeBoy -
I changed KDM_SHUTDOWN ad infinitum (as you said). I changed it with YAST and by hand (not forgetting to SuSEconfig). I tried all selections (all, local etc), but with no effect. I even reinstalled KDM. Nothing brings back the shutdown/reboot options.
Then I had the idea to switch to GDM and then back to KDM. Guess what happend ? The lovely problem was there again ! Somehow the card driver was again NVIDIA, although it was VESA before I switched from KDM to GDM.
Are you sure that the NVIDIA driver wasn't activ somehow when you had the last problem ???
Suspend is one of the actions causing the the NVIDIA problem, another is switching between user and root.
