Kde has been updated to 3.5.x, but the real changes are elsewhere
New features that has been introduced in the last weeks:
Dropping Non-GPL kernel modules means that there is less "out of the box" support for hardware
Reiser4 has been dropped
New package manager, which will bring new features MAYBE
This change lacks documentation, so we really don't know why this had to be done, nor do we actually know what are the real advantages of it
The idea is to integrate Yast and Redcarpet, this will hopefully bring more flexibility, but the new manger isn't working yet, so we dont know what it will do and how
When you get a kernel from somewhere like kernel.org, you are getting a fresh no nonGPL anyway. I don't personally think it is that hard to update, about the only nonGPL thing I use is propietary ATI drivers(and video drivers are pretty much it for most). Having to recompile one thing, really isn't that bad.
As for RC1, no, RCs come after beta, complete code freeze. Beta 6 was added because of the joys of Beta 4. So now Beta 5 delayed. Beta 6 sometime next week after thursday, in theory, and then full code freeze, only bug fixes allowed. Then they release the firct release candidate. If that works for everyone(rare) they release, but usually there will be 2 or 3 RCs before a release.
I can't hardly wait for 10.1 . I had many previous suse versions and am currently using 9.3 pro. I think alot of the new features represent true innovation. Work like xgl/compwiz is esp exciting.
It would be nice to have features like those used in luminocity and project looking glass available in a stable release soon. I would love to see the open source community beat out msft and apple in incredible guis amongst other things...
I look forward to the progess updates and review of beta 5.
Most of Beta4's rough edges have been smoothed but this beta is still not production ready
The CD 1 needs to remain in the cd drive after installing from it. Do not remove it during the reboot and wait for YaST to request CD 2.. Otherwise the installation of packages from CD 2-5 will fail afterwards.
Due to the integration of the new package manager which is not complete, note the following:
Some statistics do not work, e.g. you see "Size of packages to install: 0" - or "Number of packages to install: 0", or "Software: Default system (0)".
The graphical package manager frontend has only a limited list of "views", currently you get a list of all the packages and can only search in them.
After installation, if you go into the YaST packager, all installed packages are listed twice.
Adding a new installation source does not work.
Language dependend packages are not handled correctly. This results in the installation of one package-$lang package but not necessarily the one for the languages asked for.
An upgrade from a previous installation might fail, even one from 10.1 Beta3 Bug 153142
During an update from a previous release, packages that are not available anymore get deleted - once at the start of CD1 and then again at the end of CD1. Pressing Ignore a couple of times allows to continue. Bug 153135
The partitioner is broken in some cases Bug 151947. which might result in:
mixed up filesystem types - for example one chooses ext2 and the partition is getting formatted with reiserfs
creates double or totally obscure entries within the fstab of the system
makes inproper proposals for a standard partitioning
Download of Release Notes will fail.
The online test with download of Updates will fail.
The second part of the installation is done in text mode Bug 153066, but afterwards the graphical login manager is started.
X11 configuration during installation is totally broken in Beta5 due to a bug in package manager. Instead of the native X11 driver fbdev or even vesa driver will be configured. In order to create a valid X11 configuration stop xdm ("rcxdm stop") and use SaX2 for configuration ("sax2 -r"). ATI users should update the radeon driver first before executing SaX2. Otherwise the result will likely be a blank screen. Driver RPMs for i386/x86_64 are attached to Bug 153367 and are also on the ftp server in the fixed rpm directory.
As you can see though, there are still quite a few issues. I think I will wait for Beta 6.
after beta 6 will be better.
my desktop has 20GB free space to reserve for final release of suse 10.1.
Suse 10.1 beta 6 is expected to be released on 3rd March.
Hi, I am posting this thread with Ubuntu 6.1 DVD bootable Disk, it works great! Very nice interface. Of course, it boots slower than HDD installation.
I love it, do seriously consider to install it on HDD.
I got 1 DVD rom and 1 CD rom, the ubuntu DVD is in the DVD rom, i inserted a music CD into CD ROM, but cant't play it, do i need to mount it manually? how?

Ok, beta6 is up for grabs and many of the bugs have been solved. Partition manager is still broken in some parts, but the normal package manager is working fine. Sax2 bugs have been fixed.
Roadmap has been updated with beta7(only for SLES / NLD) and beta8. After that we will see RC1. Target date for final suse 10.1. is Apr 13 2006
Thats not all the Build Service is also showing some progress.
Site is up and alpha testing will begin soon. http://build.opensuse.org/
Also more details about it with roadmap has been released HERE

SUSE Linux 10.1 Beta 6 release.
There will be no Beta 7 of SUSE Linux mastered, only of SLES/NLD products.
For internal consistency we will just skip Beta 7 of SUSE Linux.
Okay, that means what? SLES = SuSE Linux Enterpris Server and NLD = Novell Linux Desktop(not OpenSuSE) will be having a beta 7 next week on schedule. Why not opensuse? most likely because of the types of changes they are putting into place will not be affecting opensuse, and releasing a new beta with no changes makes no sense. But, for consistency, they are not goign to call the opensuse released in 2 weeks beta 7, though really it is. They instead are keeping with the naming standard for the other 2 linux products they make, and going with 8 in two weeks, and no release next week.
