Realtek ac97 5.1 surround sound not working

i have a abit av8 with an onboard realtek ac97, and am using opensuse 10.2. i cannot get sound to play out off all my speakers, sound only comes out of my sub and right/left. i have tried setting amaroK to 5.1 but it still only comes out of 2 speakers.

I had similar problems which turned out to be a simple fix (Realtek ALC850 chip). Start music in your favorite player. Then start AlsamixerGUI. Tweak the PCM and Surround volume sliders to decrease volume to the front speakers, and increase volume to the rear speakers until you can hear all of them.

Then use application volume controls (Amarok, Xmms, etc) in the usual manner.

Use the alsamixer going over to the setting Duplicate Front and hit the spacebar so the MM is gone you should have sound from all your speakers now. Oh you may have to switch the jacks around in the back two of the ports in my board were mixed up I forget which ones now as it has been so long since I put an Audigy in there to get real surround sound, just something to look for in case your board is like mine.
