Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Realtek AC97 OnBoard Soundcard not working

Hi

I am fairly new to Linux (so please bear with me!) I am using Suse 10.0 and everything is working fine except my onboard soundcard - i have an Asus A8V-Deluxe mobo running an Athlon 64 3000+ CPU - all hardware is in working order (dual boot with XP) - soundcard is detected and configured as "VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller" which would appear to be about right - however, no sound - when playing cd audio, video or mp3.

After searching other threads, i have used alsaconf and alsamixer to detect and alter settings for my soundcard - however, what this has now done is added another soundcard in YaST as "VIA 8237" - this is configured, however it states "Configured as sound card number " <blank> now, and no number in the column above - the original soundcard listed in the previous paragraph now states it is not configured - now, i cannot click anything that makes a difference to this screen in YaST (Add/Edit/Delete etc does nothing)

So I am not making any progress, in fact seem to be making things worse than when started!

Anyone offer any help please?
thanks
andy

If you saw mixer elements when you typed alsamixer, then your soundcard is working. Use a player like xmms to make sound tests. Don't forget that KDE enables artsd, the sound daemon. So you maybe you want to deactivate it in order to use alsa directly.
