Just registered to let you know about my situation.

SINCE upgrading to openSuse 10.3_x86_64 (from 10.2_x86_64) last December, I have experienced an eerie hang MOSTLY at boot time (BEFORE the logon screen comes up). I get it every 1 boot out of 3 roughly. Everything hangs: screen mouse keyboard magicsyskeys
nothing in /var/log
I have a 64-bit Athlon and an ATI graphic card

And you are using the nVidia server for your 8400, right? I understand that the 8400 will support 3D, are you running it in that mode? Compiz running? Compiz Fusion running?

For some reason since I installed 10.3 I haven't had one crash! I'm doing everything exactly the same so somehow the switch to 10.3 has fixed things for me.

I mentioned earlier that my NVIDIA temp monitor was always up really high before a freeze (in 10.1 and 10.2). Well, under 10.3 is has remained well within the safe zone.

I'm going to add myself to this list. I started a thread sometime ago because 64bit opensuse was really unstable when I installed my AMD Phenom 9600 processor. Same thing happening as reported here, machine locks solid after a short amount of time. Anyway in the end I suspected HD after smart informed me it was on the way out, its not that HD is now in another machine and works perfect. I got a new HD for this machine and installed 10.3. It worked perfectly up until about 2 days ago. Same thing starts to happen, machine locks. This happens in both kde4 and gnome, but not console only. Running the package manager is a good way to get it to do it but not 100% consistently.

Last time I had nvidia-settings running keeping track of the GPU temp, 42C when it crashed. CPU peaked at 41C but when it crashed it was only about 37Cish. Now the only slightly interesting thing I can say is that it never happens in 32bit opensuse only 64bit. I rebooted this time with acpi=off and so far its running better, I suspect this motherboard, its never worked correctly in Linux (odd USB issues, and problems with dual channel memory) and I would bet that there is some sort of acpi issue.

I recently installed openSUSE 10.3 on an old Gateway P-II 450Mhz machine, cica 1998.

384meg memory, nVidia video card.

I've been experiencing the "lock-up" problems that have been mentioned in this thread on a fairly consistent basis -- if I'm using Konqueror to view an HTML document (even one that is locally on the machine) & scroll-down, the machine will just hang.

I can have several applications open (including, but not limited to, tv viewing, running Wine apps, Firefox, command prompt), and not have a lockup (the system will run slow -- but not lock up).

With regular consistency, when I use the vertical scrollbar in Konqueror, the system will stop dead in its tracks (I can't even push the Caps lock, for example, and have it reflected on the keyboard).

I thought that my hardware was just too old -- but it appears that others with "state-of-the-art" hardware are experiencing the same issues.

Well, I solved the problem this way: I installed Debian, and haven't had one crash. As it's a net install, you don't get too overloaded with things you neither need nor know about. Not being an expert, I like that.
When I get a new hd, I'll try another flavour of Linux, but will hang on to Deb. My nephew, who is an expert, says KDE is too big, Gnome is better. But maybe he just likes Gnome.

I am experiencing exactly the same thing, but only when I am using Konqueror. Keyboard and mouse, both freeze, while under Firefox everything is as it has to be. No "lock-ups".

Dan_D: Your experience mirrored mine, except for the fact I am using 64-bit openSUSE on an AMD x86_64. Are you using the standard driver, or are you installing the nVidia driver? The actual, latest nVidia driver solved it for me.

sniff: I am getting a heat warning, but it is about my of the SATA drives in my machine. I don't believe it is genuine, it is generated by the nVidia driver manager.

Unfortunately I haven't had the time over the last few days to play with the machine.

I'll have to confirm the next time I'm able to boot the machine up, but I'm fairly confident that I have an STB Velocity 4400 Riva TNT. Here is a link to it:

I don't know if I am using a generic or nVidia driver. I am currently using it at a 1600x1200 setting.

Unfortunately, shortly after I made my post, I had the exact same thing happen when I had Yast open.

I'll report back with my current video driver, and confirm the video card model.

My NVIDIA card has just packed up! I assume all the overheating I experienced (pre 10.3 upgrade) was infact real and took its toll!

I'm surprised Debian is okay for Pedroski because it froze on me within minutes of booting it up for the first time!

I have the problem.. nvidia geforce 6200 tc card with linux driver and I have the same problem

A bit more information presented here, hope someone can help me solve my problem.

My system configuration:
Intel P4 3.0ghz
Intel D101ggc motherboard
Geforce 6200 tc card
200 gb Seagate SATA
2X512 MB ddr ram


I used to run Debian etch earlier and I had the same problem of system freezing. I then shifted to Ubuntu feisty fawn..same problem. I then used Fedora 8 for a while and my system used to freeze every now and then.
I presently have opensuse 10.3 and the frequency of system freezes has risen. A firefox window is open on my desktop at all times so I cant guess if it is a firefox bug but I am confused what the problem could be. Is there a problem with my hardware??

I haven't had a freeze for over a week now - I stopped mucking around on the web. Then I thought I'd check this thread - twenty seconds later my machine froze. I am convinced that it is a browser problem (such failure to release RAM). However, I wonder if just maybe it is a 64-bit hardware problem. Anybody here using hardware other than 64 bit AMD? Colin

Since I received no reminders in my email, I thought this thread had ended and hadn't returned to it for over 2 months. Then I received the thread-watch messages from harsha.dsh and colinlc (the originator) saying they were still having problems.

For what it is worth, I have not had a single freeze since I last posted here back in February.

I've already outlined, above, my hardware (x86_64 ABIT board, GeForce 7300 GS video) and what I did to set up my machine. I am running in 3D mode and using Compiz Fusion. My BIOS is the very latest on the ABIT board. I have added the nVidia repository to the Community Repositories (http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.3) so I am certain of getting the latest drivers.

If anybody is interested, I would be happy to field any specific questions you have about what you may be seeing in your setup information versus what I have in mine.
