Systems frequently hangs

Hi,
I have a RHEL 4 server with Oracle 10g database. It frequently hangup without us knowing the reason behind the hangup. When I check the logs, it always has gap from when the system hang up and the time that it was already restarted. Any suggestions on how I could find out the root cause of my problem? I tried devicing a script that would run every minute and check for the top processes that is running but it also crashes crond and syslogd. TIA.

Try the following

last

Will give the last terminal or user that creashed the pc before reboot.
Go to /var/log and try

ls -lart

See the last few log files listed and check for any possible errors.

/var/log/cron will give some pointer as to if any cronjob is crashing the PC
