I'm not sure what Novell means by 'Entreprise'. Looks like serious stuff. Guess I'll eventually read it on their web site, but this 'Entreprise' sounds (no forward pun intended) like chopping off mp3 and various media support in 9.3 because of legalities and because they wanted to target a more serious market. I for one wouldn't get an 'Entreprise' version if I count on having MainActor, the MuSE MIDI sequencer and Jack audio router, or Blender bundled with SuSE simply because I wouldn't expect these packages to be part of a company-oriented 'Entreprise' edition. But I could get one if I have to setup a network server or some such where multimedia is not important (except if you're planning to stream media !).

Could be that pacman and these guys could very well be a lot busier with this 'Entreprise' version ! ,-)

Or perhaps they really mean 'Entreprise' as in 'Starship Entreprise' ;-))

Agreed, software is just about the only field where it's possible to sell stuff that's not yet finished.
Unless you own a new BMW 5-series , take the car in for service and as many as 60 of the computerized systems on the car may require software/firmware updates

yeh there is no denying that suse 10.1 is buggy, to me it handles more like a beta than a stable relice, but it works most of the time (yast works for me but takes about 10 minutes just to start the software componet )

i have been trying SLAX too, sofar as a live CD and i like what i see...
installing pakages is a simple as copying the pakage (in its own format) to /modules. next time you boot its there!

is very fast (even form CD with not much RAM, cant wait to see the speed when i install it)
teh only problem is if there isnt a pakage for it allready built (there are loads anyway...)
but theere are howtos on how to convert a RPM or slackware TGZ to SLAX .mo

hopefully suse 10.2 is going to be better with all the pakage management sorted out...
10.1 with teh yast form 10.0 would do me fine!

Ok, so I admit, I saw what made sense to me at the time...sorry, "Nlinecomputers".

I'll remove it and start over again.

Dasy2k1, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 10.2.
Carcassonne, I hope not! I like everything...including the kitchen sink thrown in. I just didn't realize 10.1 is so beta like.

Thanks, guys.....and gals if it applies.

I have Smart up and running again. I still don't understand why it just quit on me. Also, why does Yast keep giving me the message about the program I'm trying to install not being on the media?

Thanks for all of your help people. I don't know what it is about Linux, but I always seem so happy when I'm using it even though it has been giving me more probems than Windows at the moment. Where with Windows, I always feel so....so...well.....to put it bluntly, I feel like a "Two-dollar whore" at a Viagra convention!

so what you're saying is that you're ready to give up on suse 10.x. no problems here with slackware, arch, or debian like you describe with suse. maybe you just need to change distros?

I think he be better served stepping back to 10.0. I've tried to run 10.1 and had so many problems that I am staying back at 10.0.

As to the Yast problem. What sources are installed in Yast on your machine? If you got an online repository it might be offline. Hense the error. Or the source may need to be refreshed. It would help if you would post the EXACT error message.

A better idea would be to use live runs to see what your equipment likes. I would suggest mandriva, ubuntu, or if you want some fun, kororaa. I think Fedora Core 5 uses the 2.6.17 kernel, which I have heard has issues with dual core systems.

WELL, HERE WE GO YET AGAIN!!!!!
The only thing I did with Suse yesterday was to get Smart going and update. Then I shut it down and caught up on some projects. This morning I wake up and BAM....First of all, it doesn't Init5 and asks for my username and password. Ok, fine, so then I "startx" and it gives me this error:

Fatal server error:
cannot move old log file("/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to " /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old")

Something that I didn't mention before is that last week, all by it's little ol lonesome, it decides that I need to give my root password in order to shut down or reboot. That I could live with so didn't complain. However, when I can't start a GUI, it doesn't exactly make me a happy camper.

Another distro? I'm considering it, and that kinda breaks my heart. I had fallen in love with Suse, but I feel like it took a dump in my favorite pair of shoes!

I had also run into problems with Suse 10, but I don't really recall what that was at the moment since I've had all this fun with 10.1. That's what I get for being so dang tickled yesterday after I got everything running so smoothly. I guess there was something in the update that it didn't particularly care for. My first copy of Suse 9.0 was a full fledge retail copy complete with two nice thick manuals. I was thrilled! Since then I've purchased my DVD copies from on-line stores at a reasonable price that didn't include the manuals. Ok, so I didn't pay full retail price, but BY GOD, I'm trying to be supportive in my own way since I obviously can't code. Is it so unreasonable to expect just a itty-bitty-teeny-weenie-bit more for my money? Considering that fact that I've paid for Suse 9.0, 9.1,9.2, 10, 10.1, it does add up. I used to be so proud of Suse and recommended it to everyone, especially M$ users. Now, here I sit on my working copy of Windows XP Pro 64 asking for help to get my Suse Linux working....yet again! It is like having a having a Lamborghini but I'm constantly having to hitch up my old "jackass" to it so I can have it pull it into town to be fixed every morning. Not only that....but the "jackass" has a serious case of the runs, but at least It's getting me there!

"Cutting edge" is one thing....but I'm starting to feel that their idea of "cutting edge" is leaving rivlets of my blood in it's wake!

It didn't init 5. Care to elaborate on that? In stead of trying startx did you try init 3
init 5
Have you looked at your dsmeg output. I'm thinking you have got a bad hard disk.

with an "i know nothing about suse" disclaimer, it sounds more like some sort of authentication problem to me. requiring the root password to reboot or shutdown is normal (unless you had changed it), and for some reason it now sounds like root (or whatever starts X) can't write to /var/log for some reason. if you logged in at the console and moved Xorg.0.log yourself manually (either leaving an empty Xorg.0.log file in its place, or no file), it might be a quick fix until you can figure out why suse can't move it anymore.

Good advice for a home-grown ih-house homemade Linux distro.

Not for a company-run distro.

When will they put their own WGA-like in Linux that calls Novell each time it boots ? If they go on like this with quality, I'd say it's only a matter of time.

With a subject like that, why don't you? I mean, seriously. Why not entitle the thread with a subject more appropriate and descriptive of the problems you are running into?

Now as far as YOU in 10.1 is concerned: yes, it's seriously screwed up and according to many reports Novell is throwing a lot of resources at trying to resolve all the issues.

10.1 is very broken in that regard. Also, the default setting for the YaST package manager is very slow because they set refresh for all sources to enabled by default (disable it, refresh manually every few weeks). Smart stinks, IMHO, because it lacks a hierarchical package browser.

If you had run SuSE 10.0 in a heterogeneous environment, you'd appreciate 10.1. The Exchange connector is no longer broken (at this point a non-issue for us since we dumped Exchange in favor of Scalix), Samba<->KDE integration WORKS, out of the box, whereas in 10.0 it took a lot of patching and scripting to make work perfectly. SaX is no longer broken and even handles multiple ATI cards (in the same box) properly, like it used to.

I can't speak of the YOU problems (aside from the first paragraph above) though, because so far on the two workstations I've upgraded it has worked just fine. When I upgrade my own workstation I am far more likely to use yum for upgrades rather than YOU.

Kimvette, It is because at the moment I was ready to throw in the towel. It is only because of their unselfish help and encouragement that, if anything, shames me into continueing to try.

Nlinecomputers, What I mean is that when I boot up, it goes into Init3, or should I just say, text-prompt? I haven't tried to init5 yet, I've hardly been able to touch the computer the past few days except for that which is absolutely necessary. I'll try that this evening and give you a report back. (I don't think it is a HD problem at this point in time.)

Slackhack, I am soooo considering an alternative to Suse...The problem is, I have an issue with "misplaced" pig-headedness and I want to make this particular Linux work. It doesn't mean that I won't stomp, pout and cry like a spoiled child when I get frustrated and want to give up. I could live with this or that program or hardware not working properly, but not being able to boot kinda goes a long way in killing my "love-affair" with them.

Argyle, I think that should I drop Suse, that would be a wise way for me to pick it's successor.

Carcassonne, calls Novel? I don't understand.

Thanks, all!

You know, it's in the news since about two weeks. The Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) mechanism. It collects information about your computer (disk drive serial number, etc...) and about your software and establishes if you're allowed to run Windows or not (eg. did you bought it or copied it). And in order to do so it 'calls' Microsoft at each boot and sends the gathered information. MS is facing one court case because they did not clearly explain what WGA is doing when people did an update of their Windows systems.

So what I'm saying is, when Novell is ready to push on the market such as low-grade distro as SuSE 10.1 that imemdiately needs a lot of fixes, then they wouldn't object to eventually include a mechanism such as WGA to check whatever. I know, you can get SuSE 10.1 for free. But you can also buy it. The paid version got more stuff. If you're making copies of the paid version and distribute them ? I mean, Novell, as any other company, is looking about at the long term and surely one of the prospects their paid advisors have explored is Linux (SuSE) *really* becoming strong in the future and what to do then if they want to keep the cash flowing in ? It's a mandatory exercise for just about every company. And who is saying that Novell will keep a free high-performance Linux distro for free in 5 or 10 years from now ?

This being said, letting 10.1 through the door at that stage reflects a serious disdain for quality, which perhaps means that another dept. has taken charge of making decisions which could very well be marketing. I wouldn't be surprised a bit that the same mentality brews up a scheme to protect their shareholders. Especially since at the end of last year the Credit Suisse (see Linux Magazine, December 2005 I think) has stated that Novell has just enough cash to go on for about one year.

That's my two cents. I still use 9.3 and 10.0 but will not waste time looking at another SuSE until 10.3 or something. I'll definitively skip 10.2. It's against my principles to fix bugs for a product I buy from a company (at least, when so many things are going wrong - I don't mind the occasionnal fix).

Cheers.
