what solaris should i be getting for a x86 p2 300mhz with 32mb of ram? is it free or do i have to buy it?

where can i find good documentation on solaris? (google only seems to pull up either script kiddie tool sites or solaris' site where all they do is lead you in a circle trying to make you buy a 2,400$ os)

:P thanks for your time

Solaris is a different UNIX operating system manufactured and maintained by Sun Microsystems. IIRC, it's free for machines with less than 8 processors.

It's not Linux, however, so this question is in the wrong forum.

Here's a good little page I found that talks about Solaris. http://www.ehlis.com/adam/solaris/solaris.html

Currently Sun is not releasing the Intel architecture platform, only focusing on the Solaris 9 release for Sun architecture.

But like Mart stated, Solaris isn't Linux, Linux is a Unix clone, Solaris is an actual Unix OS.

If you poke around the Sun sites long enough you'll find binary copies of Solaris 8 x86 for I think the deal was $50 single license. Really though, Solaris is a slushy horking pig even on a Sparc, an x86 machine needs a lot more RAM than that.

What else is there in *nix land that will run on an x86? OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD... anything else Tricky?

Cheers,

Yeah, it might be a bit slushy but man does it feel solid and stable just working on one though.

And about the *nix's running on x86.. hmmm.. can't think of any others off my head.
I fortunately got a few copies of Solaris 8 for Intel Platform from my Solaris class, they just kept giving them to us with every book.. No poking around for me to find them.

I am waiting to install one day when I get my own solaris box. Plus I got burned out on installing doing it all the time at class

I'm telling you... I like my Sparc, its quiet, reliable, and blindly obedient...

totally unlike the entirety of www.sun.com

I found the normal old Sun download page for Solaris 8 x86 and Solaris 9, and it took too darn long. Nothing is free anymore, but a media kit of x86 Solaris is less than a SuSe boxed set. Here it is... for now:

http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html

SCO, UNIXWare, QNX, BSDi and HURD all run on x86. Solaris is quite stable but is usually much slower than Linux, especially on the low end where SUN doesn't focus much. I know performance was one of the targets for Sol9. Looks for the possibility of a Solaris forum coming to LinuxQuestions.org soon!
