I did it once, right at the beginning when I first installed WinXP. I was kinda of scared if my games/applications would run. Then I dropped win98 totally when I was "happy" with the system. This machine I'm now has WinXP and Slackware 9.0. I kinda have to say that, as soon as I got some time, Iwant to take winXP away and put back win98. A lot of emulators and older games won't run under XP even using witchcraft (have not tried yet, but oh well)...

And to imagine that most doz powerusers stuck with it purely for games...
ghehe. I mean, it could run games as well as win98, or better (in the case of GTA3, I got way better fps with winXP), but some games (Blair Witch, Unreal, Heavy Metal FAKK, just to name a few) won't run on XP, unless you search the hole net after a non-official (Unreal has an official one though) patch to run it. And hope it's not a virus, as most of non-official things for doz.
I think it's sad that those games do not run on WinXP, nor there's official support. I once e-mailed the manufactures of Heavy Metal, and they could not assist me to get the game to work under XP, since WinXP does not stands on the game box. Fair enough, but let's face it, there's no reason for a DirectX game to run on Win98 and do not run on WinXP. WinAPI Applications is ok, but when it's DirectX, the only reason I can say is... the game was hard-coded somewhere to initialize DirectX. That's pretty much what those non-official patches does, they simply makes the game initialize differently. It should take no more then 10 minutes for the manufactures to release an official patch.... but they not really care about games which are not profitable anymore. That's why I hardly buy new games today... why should I support them if they don't support me...
Second hand games always . Also, I'm moving to console gaming now. I really am tired of installing this, run that patch, update this, tweak this registry, install an older/newer wine. It's just not worthy. I'm actually selling about 500 PC games and converting buck-by-buck into PS2 and Xbox games . At the end, it's cheaper then an insane 600-800 USD/year for a new graphics card/memory(I've got a new Xbox with 3 new games(Halo, Midtown Madness 3 and GTA double pack) for 199 USD), plus it's cooler and no need for tweaks

Megaman X: Yeah I hear you. One of the main things that made my transition from doz to Mac so smooth (and fun ) was the fact that I don't PC game at all. I guess when you get down to it, some feel that's what game decks are for.
