Coming in quite late - and out of turn - just some background on StarOffice:

StarOffice was originally written by "StarDivision" out of germany. The original company (at stardivision.de) was wholly purchased by Sun Microsystems to be run as the center of Sun's JavaONE "solution" (full Java environment with all necessary tools - regardless of underlying OS/Hardware).

Since that initiative still may happen, Sun did the Free Software world a big favor by spinning off OpenOffice just prior to closing the doors on StarOffice to re-focus StarOffice as a commercial endeavor.

Actually, a 'spinoff' of minix., an OS written by one of his teachers as a learning tool.
