gee, another 9.0-9.1 thread, heh

khi, stupid question time!

is the second ISO necessary...or more importantly, what's on it? the two reviews i read gave me the impression it was basically gnome, kde and a few extras that i didn't need buuuuuuut when i get to the package selection screen on 9.1, the only available option is "base linux system".
my 9.0 disc gives me the option to install a base linux system and a host of other things (series AP, D, F, L, N, T, TCL, X, XAP, Y) -- what gives? The 9.0 disc limited me to series A before, but I'd had a slack install at the time, which wasn't the case when I tried 9.1. I kind of dread downloading the second ISO as I'm on dialup :P

also, while my 9.0 CD is bootable, my 9.1 CD is not. can i start the setup process with the 9.0 disc, then swap the 9.1 in when it asks where i'm installing from? i've got the boot and root floppies, but the floppies are pushing ten years old and who knows when they're gonna die? Sadly, I haven't been able to find a box in stores.

oh, and while i'm here, anyone have suggestions on books or sites a *nix/slack newb should read? while i can do everything i want to do right now, i know i'm not tapping into half of it's potential... learning would be cool even if it's stuff i'm not likely to use :P

Three suggestions for books:

Slack - http://www.slackware.com/book/
Rute - http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/index.html
Linux - http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/runux4/

I think there must be something wrong with your disk. Disk 2 indeed only includes gnome and kde along with some rather outdated extras (like bittorrent and swaret). If you need them, you'll be better off grabbing more recent versions from the internet anyway. Everything else is on disk 1, which should also boot (at least mine does).
