sysV-init editor issue with kde 3.2.1

what is this tool for?i ran it and it gave me some messages about my init script files being in a folder that doesnt exist and if i want to reconfigure it or not. i think the first time i chose yes and later i even chose no and got the same result. it opens a window with all the runlevels and i suppose a way to edit services and stuff to start when i go into that run level. however when i rebooted and got to the login manager i had a bunch of user accoutns to choose from (instead of root an mine as before), account names like reboot, halt, and other ones i dont remember now. anyway, no matter which one i choose kde will not start. i get a command line box but cannot type anything in it. i can get to a console on tty6 and login as root, though.

now this is for runlevel 4, if i change to runlevel 3 i can login and do a startx and all is well. i can then go into the login manager config and change it back tot he way it was (showing only the two accounts) and go back to RL4 but it doesnt help

any ideas?

Slackware does not use Sys V init. It uses bsd style. That is why it doesn't do much.

i figured that out, but cant seem to fix kde or kdm. anyone know what happened o rwhat file(s) sysv init changed? its a pretty new install, so i can just reinstall but i would like to fix this, since it works in RL3 i know kde works ok, but in RL4 it doesnt so it seems like something is wrong with either kdm or the init scripts that start kde from kdm
